Evil in Arkansas: Shattered Hopes and Horrors of the Crescent Hotel

When people arrived in Eureka Springs, Arkansas in May 1886 the excitement was palpable in the air. After two years of construction a new hotel was opening, but this was no typical boarding house. This hotel promised luxury, and it delivered. Large and airy rooms, an extravagant dining area, opulent gardens, swimming pools, tennis courts, fine linen, stables, and impressive landscapes all set the stage for a dream-like experience. It opened on such a positive note, but in 1940 when the owner walked out the doors for the last time they left a house of horror behind them.

A GHOSTLY FACE AT THE HAUNTED CRESCENT HOTEL? - The Crescent Hotel and Spa (1886) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. A zoom in on a window of the allegedly haunted Crescent Hotel’s creepy back walkway. No other people were observed, inside or outside, as I walked past these windows and peered inside these empty rooms. Some contend that a “figure” - or a “face” - is readily visible peering from this window! And, indeed, one can certainly interpret the visage of a face looking through this window. This photo was taken near the spot where, according to hotel ghost lore, a distraught woman fell to her death in a fit of suicidal despair. Is this a ghostly face captured on camera at one of “America’s Most Haunted Hotels?” Or are we looking at a pareidolic trick of light, shadow and suggestion? I’m quite sure an explanation exists - which one, I do not know the answer to. Future visits may provide clues, or they may simply lead to more unanswered questions to explore. Intriguing (and creepy) at any rate! THE HAUNTED CRESCENT’S BACK WALKWAY - The Crescent Hotel and Spa (1886) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. A creepy nighttime shot of the allegedly haunted Crescent Hotel’s back walkway. This dark path leads past, and around, the hotel’s spa and banquet hall area. No other people were observed, inside or outside, as I walked past these windows and peered inside. Yet, some folks who have been shown this pic contend the a “figure” - or a “face” - is readily visible peering from the dark window just above the optical lens flare! Incidentally, this photo was taken near the spot where, according to lore, a distraught woman fell to her death in a fit of suicidal despair. Is this a spectral “entity” captured on camera at a notoriously haunted hotel? Or just a trick of light, shadow and imagination? (Don’t see it?
