Hey! I finally got enough money to attend a film summer camp and LA, but I'm a little nervous because I don't know what to expect. I want to be prepared so I don't embarrass myself haha! Can you give me any tips on how to stay ahead in my classes?

The first and most important piece of advice I would give is to ask questions! Get comfortable with not knowing things and don’t be afraid to learn.

I have been both a clueless PA and one of the more experienced people on set so I have seen it from both angles. I was shy and didn’t want to ask when I didn’t know something, but as a result, I wasn’t good at my job and I didn’t impress anybody my first time around. Now, I am always super excited to work with newbies that ask questions, take initiative, and try to learn outside of their specific job. It shows commitment and interest and it makes things easier on set. Also, there will always be someone who knows more than you on set so there is always something you can learn.

Another tip I would give is learn crew positions and set jargon. It’s good to know who to talk to for specific questions, and you will get a feel for set hierarchy quicker. Also, knowing some jargon is a quick and easy way to seem more experienced.

There is a document in the resource drive (see bio) that has a list of these positions and a brief description of what they do. I am working on a jargon document as well. Below is a very short list of words you will probably use/hear:
