Ini merupakan peluncuran ke delapan SpaceX untuk membawa astronot ke Stasiun Luar Angkasa Internasional (ISS).
Kontrak yang dilakukan SpaceX dengan NASA mengharuskan SpaceX untuk menjadi kendaraan misi luar angkasa yang saat ini telah menjalankan 8 misi rutin di beberapa tahun terakhir.
Peluncuran misi Crew-5 di lakukan di landasan peluncuran 39A Kennedy Space Center pada siang hari. Terdapat 4 astronot yang akan melakukan penelitian di ISS diantaranya, Nicole Mann sebagai komandan misi, Josh Cassada sebagai pilot misi, dan Koichi Wakata, dan Anna Kikina sebagai spesialis misi. Mereka diperkirakan akan tiba di ISS pada hari kamis waktu setempat.
Diketahui keempat astronot akan menghabiskan waktu hingga 6 bulan di ISS dan akan melakukan penelitian dari masing-masing subject penelitian negaranya.
