Crickle-Crack
Crickle-Crack
So I went to my mom's house the other day, and I was looking through some of the books she'd saved from when I was a kid. I came across this little gem that I remembered getting from the school book fair back in the day. I remember it had pretty illustrations of cute squirrels and trees, but little else. I opened it and started reading it and... Y'all. This book is about drugs. And I mean, they're not even being subtle. Look at the title...
It literally has "crack" in the title. I can't believe this went over my head, even as a kid.
But I mean look!
Cute squirrel! Pretty trees! Can this REALLY be an anti-drug PSA? Buckle up!
So this squirrel named Squeakers, comes across the Crickle-Crack tree one day and remembers that his parents told him to NEVER eat the buds off the tree. So what does Squeakers do?
Eats the damn buds of course! And then...
He gets high as fuck. Poor Squeakers can't stop eating the buds now! He's distracted at school! He can't sleep! He needs his fix of (Crickle) crack!
Squeakers looks like how I feel.
Even the neighbor squirrels start to notice Squeakers's crack problem.
There's no disapproval quite like the neighbor squirrel watching you do crack disapproval.
JESUS FACKIN' CHRIST. Just look at what crack did to poor Squeakers! You don't want to be like Squeakers, kids, do you? DO YOU?
But it's ok, kids. They burn down the tree and all is well. Until a NEW tree grows in it's place!!! So the moral is, don't be like Squeakers. Don't be a drug-taking squirrel. How's that for a bedtime story?
I can hardly believe I read this story with my own two eyes as a 6-8 year old and was like, "Oh this is fine." 😂
