Generally speaking in what scenarios aside from maybe the mouth is shut tight that the medic needs to do that, i forgot the name, cutting part of someone's throat for breathing aid?

You're thinking of a cricothyroidotomy (crike). A crike is done when an airway is needed fast but the patient can't be intubated. This can be in cases of upper airway trauma or obstruction (anaphylaxis or other allergic reactions, burns, facial fractures).

Needle Cricothyroidotomy - a MUST KNOW ED procedure

Indications:

Can't intubate / Can't ventilate

Who:

Children <5 rather than open/surgical cric (& 5-12 yr olds if difficult anatomy)

Adults IF cannot do open/surgical cric

Additional point:

Crash procedure ONLY - buys MAX of 40 mins - in reality probably 15-20

SO.........GET HELP ASAP once in for definitive airway (ENT / anaesthetics etc)

Limited ventilation (particularly in bigger people) / oxygenation mainly

Use available tubing (we have Cook) from oxygen supply

Turn up oxygen to 1L/min/kg OR whatever minimum flow rate rises chest

Occlude 'holes' in tubing...........1 sec on..........4 sec off..........
