IT’S NOT OFTEN SHE IS CAUGHT OFF GUARD. But many things Zaynab does catch Rowena off guard , in ways she finds difficult to explain. They are lounging in the shade of trees , the warm summer air broken up by the breeze ( sometimes conjured by her fae magic ) , and it brings the occasional bit of debris. A leaf , a flower petal. The latter is what lands on her shoulder and what prompts the princess to reach across the short space between them and pluck it from her shirt.
The motion is fluid and does not interrupt the story she’s telling in the slightest. Maybe that’s what strikes her about it : the fact it’s so simple. Easy. And maybe that’s what makes her reach for her hand before it’s gone. She interlocks their fingers , keeping a loose hold and letting their hands gently dangle in that small space. She says nothing but listens for any hesitation or catch in the other woman’s voice. Waits to see if she will pull back further or stay. Rowena knows which she hopes for. Maybe she is also caught off guard.
