The den of the syndicate resides in the heart of the capital. A traditional house that serves as a place for the members of the Yamazaki clan to gather, one where Dai can always be found at. The air in the room is of high temperature, alcohol and sweat, while the noise of chatters and bangning glasses are loud on the wood of the table, all sitting down the futons and served by their girls wearing the most aestival yukatas one can find. In the middle of the pack, Dai is sitting down as well, a little bent over his glass, bare feet, exposed chest, while the tattoo master, on their knees right behind him is perfectIing the last detail to the new addition on the canvas of ink that is his back. A moment for any member, including the boss, that should never be private, their backs being a tribute to the clan, it is always in the middle of a moment of life, surrounded, that each one of them would get ink done. Sake is being passed along with the meat, loudly chewed and consumed as laughters explode from a story Kaze is sharing, another ridiculous happening from one of the clubs they are running from the shadow. "Boss. Someone's asking for you." The line however comes from the other side of the room, interrupting, from one of the henchmen walking in, head deeply bowed, knowing Dai does not like to be requested when dinner is getting served. "Yeah? Am I not in the middle of fucking something?" Dai spits, previously laughing to tears to whatever Kaze was explaining while the others keep on laughing and getting agitating, yet his features dropping into annoyance. "They say it's important, Boss. They insist to come in, Boss." Dai raises his hand then, for the tattoo master to stop his needle as a drop of blood is still sliding down Dai's shoulderblade, while the others cut the laughters, paying attention to the situation. "Alright." Dai speaks with another gesture of the hand instructing the henchman to bring the intruder in. Silence. All eyes on them, from both the boss, the girls and the members of the clan.

"Huh. So you come into my house in the middle of my beef, how audacious. See that handsome lad over there, he was telling the most hilarious story of that motherfucker Uchiyama overdosing while taking a shit. Whatever you have to say better beat that."

《 WHO ARE YOU? 》

“Hey, hey, stop struggling,” Hyunwoo yelled as he scrambled towards the prone cyclist, pushing past the gaggle of onlookers with their phones set to record and dropping to his knees next to the injured man.

“I said stop fucking struggling!,” he snapped, finally catching the man’s attention as Hyunwoo placed his hand on the cyclist’s chest and forced him to look at him and not his bloodied tibia exposed for the world to see.

Who are you?

“I’m a doctor, okay? A doctor,” he repeated, searching the man’s panicked gaze for some measure of understanding as he clasped his outstretched hand and gave it a squeeze - noting with some measure of relief that the cyclist could still wiggle his fingers.

“I’m gonna look after you but I need you to breathe for me, okay?,” he urged, giving the man’s hand another squeeze as he took a deep breath himself, encouraging the other to follow suit.

“Deep breaths… that’s it… nice and slow,” he murmured in encouragement, frowning slightly to himself as the younger man winced with each breath - adding a possible fractured rib to the cyclist’s growing list of injuries.

《 HOW DID YOU GET HERE? 》

How did you get here?

“The ambulance is already on it’s way,” he reassured the other, eyes sweeping the length of the cyclist’s body for any more discernible injuries; already far too aware of the cyclist’s cold, clammy hand and his bloodless lips - the shock already settling in.

“But you’re in luck,” he informed him, forcing the man to stay awake as the blare of the sirens grew louder and louder all around them.

“I just recently reopened my clinic and it’s not too far from here,” he continued even as he waved down the paramedics with his free hand, quickly updating the two EMT’s on the man’s status as they lifted him off the ground and onto the ambulance.

“So I’ll have you patched up in no time,” he promised, turning back to the cyclist as he climbed in behind him, already reaching for a pair of gloves as the doors slammed shut behind them.

“WOO JINSOO is a twenty-two-year-old PART-TIME INTERN at EMERGENCY RESPONSE HQ, HACKER and DRUG RUNNER that goes by the alias ZN.”

There were always so many ways to answer a question like this. Who really was anyone? His lips pursed into a tight line, dimples dipping at the corners of his mouth to visibly form his obvious discomfort. He never was great at interacting socially and this was almost like the world was putting that factuality to the test. ‘Annoying’ would be an understatement. “Woo Jinsoo.” Was that the correct answer? Some sort of deep symbolic answer could have been the true aim to this, but he wasn’t necessarily feeling in touch with his 70s’ existential crisis mode at the moment and he didn’t want to seem pretentious for thinking too deeply about something that was probably a simple question.

《 HOW DID YOU GET HERE? 》

The question progressed and his eyes narrowed as they shifted in a direction that seemed to show that growing bundle of discomfort that was growing into a mound within his chest. Now it seemed to be a question of, Should he answer the obvious and risk the option of being a smartass prick, or to just simply answer in a different direction and seem like an idiot who had no grasp on the current context. It was equally as frustrating on either side of this spectrum. “Not so much a, ‘How’, as this is a, ‘Why’– but, My Mother’s side of the family is from here before they moved to America– and figured I’d make a visit, see what it’s about, catch my bearings?“ A pause, his shoulders bunching up in a shrug before exhaling slowly in unison to the motion. “It’s comfortable enough … I suppose.” He couldn’t help the wrinkle between his eyebrows from becoming slightly more prominent than it was moments prior. It wasn’t a lie, But, It was a portion of the truth. He wanted to be as far away from the shit show that was happening at home– and it was just as easily better off anywhere than there. The silent expectations that enclosed on him were almost suffocating in their own light, and anywhere was better than there.

he lets out a winded whistle.  “wow, this really feels like the interview process i went through to get into the academy.  ‘cept back then, i didn’t have slugger here to calm me down.”  he gives the german shepherd sitting proudly at attention a quick pat on the head.  “you can pat him too, if you wanna.  he’s off duty.”  when the burly man sitting across the table doesn’t move to do so, ziyi feels a bit offended.  who doesn’t want to pet a dog?  he’d jump at first chance to pet one.

nevertheless, he continues:

“ah, where do i even start?”  he rubs the back of his neck and laughs, but his laughter is short-lived;  mr. burly man doesn’t look amused.  “i’m wang ziyi – or well, technically, wang sungki, if we’re going by passport names – born and raised in seoul.  i’m twenty-five . . no, twenty-six.”  he counts his fingers.  “. . five, six—yeah, twenty-six.  that makes me sound really old, doesn’t it?”  it dawns on him in that precise moment that the interviewer is at least fifty.  “not that being old is bad.  it’s actually really respectable.  my parents are your age, and slugger here is nearin’ middle-age in human years—”

he lets out a short breath.

“is this being evaluated?”

《 HOW DID YOU GET HERE? 》

“by boat?”  he blanks.  “or do you mean to my current position?“  mr. burly man doesn’t respond.  slugger barks.  okay, danger.  “uh, well.  i was in the academy for a few years.  did patrol for a year after that, then got transferred to the canine unit.  ended up here, since no one else would volunteer.”  the smile slips slightly, and his eyes, once gleaming with enthusiasm, dim just a bit.  “i can see why.”
