corners of her mouth are weighed down with discontent, her eyes cast downward, phone now resting face down on her lap. as usual, it’s only taken just a brief conversation with her mother to plummet her mood entirely. it happens far less these days with the amount of distance college has put between them, but when it does, it’s just as disheartening as it had been a year ago.
“ nothing. ” she grumbles, sharp enough for her to feel a pang of guilt only seconds later, because he doesn’t deserve it. he might not be an ideal citizen, but he’s still a better parental figure than either of her parents had ever been. fingers drum against the back of her cellphone, and for the briefest moment, she considering crushing it entirely, disconnecting her from the only existing line to her mother she has. but she doesn’t, and it’s only partly because she doesn’t want to explain how she has the strength to do that. “ my mom’s just... a lot. ”
