Advanced Illustration 2 ~ dimension 

Guen Douglas (top) and Katy Lahv (bottom) are two artists which I have admired for a while. Probably not a pair that you would see coupled anywhere else, considering how different their styles and outcomes are - however I wanted to showcase the level of detail and the dimension that said detail can bring to a design.  First, let's look at Guen's light house scene. I think this image really has a flow, and the detail in the rope around the top really frames the image well. I think that sharing detail out equally over a design is important, to have it concentrated more in certain areas than others, so that you can accentuate one thing as a focal, whilst not having something else overshadow it. In this case, such as the light house. I absolutely love the little hut at the bottom, it is a great addition and the detail in it draws your eye in, following it all the way up to the lighthouse. The detail in the brick work in this light house makes it a focal point of the image, however contrasting this with the heavy shading in the sky helps those intricate details not to be overcrowded or over shadowed, and also gives it the strong dimension aspect clear to me in this work, as it really makes the lighthouse stand against the sky and background. 

Moving on to Katy Lahv's work. I think the detail she has achieved here is more about design elements such as characteristics that gives her work dimension. For instance composition has so much to do with dimension, and I admire how she has placed everything in this image. I think the heavy shading in the background makes the girl and her cat really pop in the foreground, creating dimension and depth to a very 2D design.

Advanced Illustration 2 ~ detail

This is one of the image which I viewed on tumblr at the beginning of this brief that really inspired my art work. This drawing is by Geneka McCall, I love the minimal colour palette, and I think that the subject matter is really original and wonderful. I think that the nautical theme is easily characterised and looks wonderful when you add personality to it. I think she has achieved this not only with the image of the whale with the house growing out of / placed on top of his back, but also the expression in his face. I love the little sea creatures at the bottom, the birds and trees above water, I think it is these small details which really emphasise the narrative in this image.   This image shows off small details everywhere and the more you look, the more you see. There is a tiny little guy sitting fishing on top of the roof, one at the bottom of the garden.. I think it is these small aspects of a design, known as detail, which really make an image great.
