The Shot
He prodded the wood with a branch, knocking some of the charred logs over and causing the fire to lick upwards, briefly. The campfire crackled gently, casting comfortable warmth onto the wary traveler who sat before it. The night was still and frigid, snow blanketed the ground and the fire provided the only light in this small section of forest.
Brown orbs stared passively at the fire, glazed over slightly and half-lidded to indicate that his mind was elsewhere. The crunch of snow, barely audible over the crackle of the fire, brought a gleam of alertness to his eyes as he cast them upwards. From the darkness, like a spirit, wolf emerged into the orange firelight, taking cautious steps. Its head was lowered, ears and intense yellow eyes directed straight at the camper. The raven coat bore stark accents of snow like diamonds.
Hardly wasting a moment, the camper reached out to his side, towards something black. The wolf swung its head upwards after the sudden motion, lips curled slightly to bare pearly fangs with a low growl. With the warning issued, the man slowed his movements, lifting the heavy object in his hands. A small click sounded and he set down something in his lap, before shutting his left eye to take careful aim.
The shutter clicked and the creature recoiled backwards ever so slightly, pausing just a moment before turning away from the fellow traveler. A final, yellow-orbed glance was cast, before the specter melted back into the darkness.
