Is there any way that the mutated stygian midra can be saved? Or is the only way to save them to put them out of their misery?

Initially there is no way to save them. The Machine warps them so much that the only thing that can be done to help them is to put them down.

However, thanks to the effects being a bit delayed on a human, Ori had the chance to analyse the effects. Later he is able to reverse engineer enough that the last handful of the Stygian can get their minds back.

Unfortunately, their physical changes can't be undone, and their lifespan is dramatically reduced, but they do get a peaceful retirement together on Eden-9.

Is having kittens something that is practically required/would you be looked down upon if you didn't do so? Asking for the sex repulsed cats out there.

Of course not! In fact, the opposite is often true. In a litter with several cats surviving to warriorhood, it'll be encouraged that only one, maybe two of them have kits. The only time having a family will be suggested (never forced, just suggested) is if you're the only one left of your family line that can have kits. Other than that, it's usually a good thing to not have a bunch of kittens, and many warriors elect out of it.
