“you feel like home to me.”

the truth is ugly ( or she is ).
satomi’s heart clenches as those words, innocently delivered as kaori laces their fingers together with a smile. she wants to blame it on external forces—the tight stretch of fabric over her chest from a sweater one size too small, the biting cold pricking color into her cheeks, the oppressive crush of people surrounding them in the midday bustle—but as someone who’s spent her life in pursuit of the truth, she can’t ignore what she feels. it threatens to choke her every time she opens her mouth, every time kaori looks at her with sparkling eyes, everytime her touch fills satomi with a deep and lingering warmth—
and then there is shiro in the periphery, stealing that away. even when he’s not around, satomi can sense his shadow looming above them, between them, drawing a subtle line in the sand. before shiro, there were others—but those others weren’t also her friends. satomi may be a bitch capable of a lot more than you’d expect, but she doesn’t hurt her friends ( intentionally; never mind that she’s unsure if shiro has the capacity to feel pain ). kaori is with shiro. kaori likes shiro. satomi should be supportive of that, not jealous. is it fair for her to hold kaori’s hand so tightly when she wants nothing more than to press her lips to kaori’s and kiss her until they’re both dizzy for air?
she should pull away, out of respect for shiro and their relationship and in defiance of her own silly urges. but kaori would ask why, and satomi’s not selfish or cruel enough to tell her just yet. she has none of the gryffindor bravery; the hat called her a snake through and through. someday she will make that cut and tell kaori what she ought to and face the rejection head on, but right now, she’s a coward in denial of her own feelings. it’s easier for everyone if she pretends she isn’t in love with kaori.
and as a coward, she laughs and tugs her best friend closer with a grin, away from the crowds and prying eyes and into the shade of a tree. “are you sure about that, kaorin? shouldn’t that honor go to someone else?”
for all her light hearted tone and careful nonchalance, when she turns away briefly, her expression slips. don’t make this harder on me, please. i don’t deserve this.
