Thanks... I do hope I find the time
I've finally gotten around to reading the new instalment and wow that has been... quite something? Your writing is really amazing !! I honestly never get tired of it. And I absolutely love how you manage to incorporate politics into your stories (in a way that stays very true to the narrative, if that makes sense?) Anyways I've just really wanted to thank you for acknowledging that Brynden just might not be a heterosexual - that actually made me reaaaaaaaally happy :--)
(second message) Oh ! And btw, I am totally expecting a drabble about Brynden and his mystery knight now, haha ;-)
Oh, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m working on the next chapter of “Among the Lions” now, but this series is really jumping to the front of my brain, so I’m afraid I may end up writing the next installment sooner rather than later! There aren’t many left, so I think my brain just wants to FINISH, LOL! It’s a fairly painful universe, but I’ve grown attached to it in spite of the tears, so I’m glad you like it.
And BRYNDEN!!!! How I love my Blackfish!! And yes,I tend to see him as gay. I always have, even on my first read of the books as he stood by his adamant refusal to marry to the point of a rift with his brother in spite of the Tully “Family, Duty, Honor” code. I realize there are MANY reason he could have refused, and a lot of them could have nothing to do with sexual orientation. In fact, as I do with pretty much every character (except Ned and Cat who I find it almost PHYSICALLY PAINFUL to pair with anyone except each other), I’ve imagined a number of back-stories for him--some of which include romantic feelings for women. But, my “real” headcanon for him has always been that he is gay. He is a soldier, a seasoned warrior, a “manly” man who in many ways is the “ideal” man in this society. But he also is an honest man, I think--too honest with himself to pretend to be something he isn’t or to marry a woman knowing there’s no chance that he could actually love or even be truly attracted to her. Of course, he IS conscious of the whole “family, duty, honor” thing, so rather than risk any sort of shame on his House, he just says “NO” to all marriage requests or orders from Hoster with no explanation and attempts to live his life both as honorably (by traditional terms) and as honestly (in terms of whom he chooses to love) as possible--always loving his family and serving House Tully as much as he can without compromising that. Basically, in Westeros, he’s caught living a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” sort of life, and just as Catelyn accepts her traditional role as always secondary to the authority of a man (be it father or husband) even though she is plenty intelligent enough to see the unfairness of that, Brynden accepts the reality of his life in this society as well. And both Cat and Brynden simply do the best they can WITHIN the system and its constraints to live their lives as authentically and with as much autonomy as they can carve out for themselves. :-) That’s my take on it, anyway.
As for the knight he loves, as mentioned briefly in “A Price To Be Paid?” Well he’s an OC. He’s a Vale man, (and yes, he’s one of the motivating factors for Brynden to take up service with Jon Arryn. Yes, he wants to stay near Lysa, for he fears she needs more guidance and protection than Catelyn, but the fact that it gives him an excellent reason to stay near the man he loves seals the deal!) So, maybe, I’ll write you that drabble some day. :-)
