there's like no way not to make that awkward but honestly if they assume that you're being patronizing that's not your fault... that's their bad attitude! i'm sure you didn't come across as that bad tbh but even if oyu did its their interpretation

this happens to me too, it really sucks, and there's no way to really respond to that, in fear of sounding condescending i just go "hmm" or something like that
