Introduction to crop factor

Today, we will be learning about crop factor.

Crop factor is the relationship between the sensor size & the full frame, or the product of the CF & the focal length.

The crop factor in a nutshell allows you to change the depth of the picture without changing the resolution. Hence, it can be viewed as the crop feature of your favorite photo editing application.

Camera Considerations: Resolution, Lens + Crop Factor

Resolution = The size of image your camera can record

This is important when considering where people will watch your film, for example on the internet or theatrically

Lens + Crop Factor

The kind of sensor your camera has determines the kind of lens you can use, and will also determine your field of view with the same lens. For example a same lens on a camera with a small sensor (e.g APS-C sensor) will have a reduced field of view in comparison to a full frame sensor. Simply put a smaller lens can give us a cropped image in comparison to a larger sensor with the same lens. This is known as “Crop Factor.”

The importance of crop factor come in for example in scenarios where you are wanting a very wide image as a film maker, this is when you have to take crop factor into consideration.
