Ok, so this past Monday I returned battered and bruised from my masters thesis field trip and it was honestly so life changing. My thesis topic is studying carbon and nutrients deposited in sediments along the lower Mississippi River floodplain. So basically we went out into some woods and some fields and dug up this most recent floods deposits.
The first picture depicts what the flood layer looks like. The top 10 mm were deposited in the 2020 flood.
The second and third photos are examples of how crossbeds form within sandstones! I thought this was super cool even though sedimentary rocks aren’t my comfort zone yet.
The fourth picture is of a loess outcrop outside the Saint Catherine’s Creek National Wildlife Refuge with my advisor for scale. Loess is an aeolian glacial sediment deposit and is super soft to touch!
The final picture is of the narrowest part of the Lower Mississippi River in Natchez Mississippi at golden hour. She’s stunning.
