Race Report: SoCalCross #2 CROSSITAS at Lake Casitas
I messed up.
After race #1, the ice was broken and I was getting used to my new Scott cyclocross bike, so I thought I would be able to do well at race #2 if I would just put together a clean race. (yes, clean and cyclocross in the same sentence!)
And it started well, I was moving up the field quickly via sneaky passes on the outside.
Then I got into a rhythm behind Vu, he was taking good lines that I was trying to emulate and we kept moving up together.
But I think we were 6th & 7th at the beginning of lap 3, hunting down the top5, when a wood splinter the size of a middle finger back-stabbed my front tire. It did a few wheel rotations before falling off, but I knew right away it was going to be fatal and end in sealant tears.
And for some stupid reason I did not have a spare tube with me! That was really dumb of me. I always have one, and I pay the 0.5 lbs penalty just in case, except of course the day I flat. So my race was over not even half way.
That sucked because the course was really fun and FAST. I was enjoying it. And I think I could have done well there.
Oh well. It was again just a teaser of all that could have been.
