So I heard this song and it was pretty damn good, it feels a lot like an anime opening, I sit down to translate it and wait a minute
it is a fucking anime opening. A doujin one though, from the good fellows in the doujin circle Kinema 106 who usually do Kantai Collection music and videos. Not only did they do a fully animated opening sequence (within their reasonable and independent production values) but if you check their website you can see a ton of information for their project.
To the best of my knowledge (there’s too much text) it’s kind of a concept for a mech anime where these people known as Crosslets form pacts with contractors, they’re sort of giant robots, there’s the side of tenshi (angels) and the side of akuma(demons). Our two featured characters are the protagonist Touma who’s contracted with the akuma Mephistopheles and the heroine is Mirei who’s contracted to the tenshi Metatron. Mephistopheles has heat-stealing powers apparently, and Metatron has a sick name that’s for sure. There’s a couple other female characters, including a cute non-threateningchildhood friend and I guess the other one is supposed to be the tomboyish one who’s also mysterious. The video shows that the setting is quite modern as some Shibuya landmarks can be seen but not much other advanced technology aside from you know, mechs.
Have to take my hat off for Tom, the leader of the circle as he not only took care of composing but also animating, the amount of work that went into this is obviously massive. Overall, I don’t expect to ever see this project go further than this (lol) but I have to recognize, they really made one absolutely kick-ass song. This tells me they truly understand the essence of mecha anime, what’s important isn’t the animation or how original it is but rather the fucking opening themes, that’s what all mech anime comes down to in the end.
