You know, I see a lot of talk about how calm Aziraphale is while slammed against a wall and how it’s a sign of trust and that he knows Crowley won’t hurt him and that is all totally valid.
But we don’t talk enough about how this is also a sign of trust from Crowley.
Like, do you know how scary it is to have a temper? To walk around not knowing what’s going to set you off, how bad it’s going to be, and whether you’re going to drive away people you care about for good?
It feels like being Bruce Banner. It’s exhausting. And sometimes you don’t have access to your coping skills - in the middle of searching a satanic convent, you can’t just call a time out to go for a quick drive or shout at some plants. So you have to keep that s**t on lock down and it just eats away at you.
In this scene, Crowley is on edge. He’s scared. He’s feeling the guilt from f***ing up and possibly dooming himself, the entire earth, and Aziraphale. And he just did a couple of things that even on their own would get him into serious trouble and instead of just letting it go, Aziraphale keeps harping on it and, worse, calling him nice.
And Crowley loses his temper.
Now there’s been some discussion about what he’s doing, exactly, and different answers come to mind. He’s trying to shut up Aziraphale before he says something some nuns might hear. He’s trying to remind Aziraphale of the roles they have to play. He’s acting up in case he needs an alibi later. He’s reasserting his sense of control over the situation.
Again, all of these are valid, and a person can actually have multiple reasons for doing a single action. We’re complex like that.
But also sometimes you just have to get the emotions out of your system and it’s not going to look pretty.
So he grabs Aziraphale and shoved him against a wall. And this is where the trust comes in.
Crowley trusts Aziraphale not to take it personally. Not to get scared. Not to try to fight him off.
Not to argue back. Not to try and bring it up later.
He also trusts Aziraphale to take him seriously. These are perfectly valid emotions he’s feeling at that moment, and his method of expression might be unhealthy but that doesn’t make what he’s feeling wrong. He trusts Aziraphale not to degrade him, or ignore him, or try to undermine his feelings by interrupting or laughing or saying he looks cute.
(I can explain about rejection sensitive dysphoria if anyone needs it. We generally talk about how it kicks in when someone rejects our feelings of enthusiasm, but having your anger be rejected is painful, too.)
Crowley needs to be angry and Aziraphale lets him be angry. He pays attention even though the rant is a little silly. He lets Crowley push him against the wall and stays still even though he could pick up the demon and dribble him like a basketball. When they get interrupted he still waits for Crowley to signal that the moment is passed rather than shoving the demon away and walking off.
In conclusion, Crowley feels safe being snappy, rude and even angry around Aziraphale and that is a huge act of trust. His temper is as much a part of him as his love and his drunk disaster side. He is comfortable with Aziraphale seeing him not just at his most uncool but at his literal worst, knowing that this has never been a deal breaker for them.
Anyway. I would love to see more fic of Crowley with a temper because being able to fight and make up is an essential part of a healthy relationship, not to mention cathartic to the readers. I’ve already written a few stories with Crowley’s temper, and I plan to do some more.

You didn’t mention having to negotiate the health insurance policies then, but there I was, carbon copying London Zoo’s contracts and find/replacing “big cat” to “fucking velociraptor”!

Last year I was very priviledged to work on a new BBC audio drama called Murmurs, featuring writers from some of my favourite podcasts, like Within The Wires, We Fix Space Junk, Victoriocity and Wooden Overcoats to name but a few!
I was asked to direct two episodes of the series (Over and Out & The Queue), and had the opportunity to work with some of my audio drama writing heroes: Chris and Jen Sugden of Victoriocity and Tom Crowley of Wooden Overcoats, Victoriocity and Crowley Time.
I also got to work inside the incredible recording studio at BBC Cymru Wales in Cardiff (in their old building, they’ve recently moved to a new studio).
You can find the show wherever you get your podcasts, or on BBC Sounds
