Re: Dean's Redemption for Season 9
This is in response to your post about hoping to see this current arc bringing some redemption for Dean and your ramblings about missing the traits about him that made you fall in love with him to begin with. I can so relate to you about this it’s not even funny.
I was just commenting the other day about how much my view of Dean has changed during season 9. The topic of conversation was how people who have watched since the beginning and people who binge watched the entire series later on tend to view him differently. As someone who has been watching the show since season 1, I sort of feel like I’ve had Stockholm Syndrome this entire time as far as Dean’s concerned because of how sympathetic the narrative has been to him until now. It’s been pretty jarring, to say the least.
The narrative this season is pointing out some of his character traits that are pretty unattractive and it’s like I’m seeing him for who he truly is for the first time. The things that are being pointed out aren’t even new facets of his personality. They’re traits that he’s always had, but since the narrative has always supported him it was easier for me to forgive him for some of the shitty things he’s done. They’re not doing that this season so it’s pretty much forced me to reevaluate the character entirely. I’m really hoping that there’s a larger purpose for the narrative pointing these things out which leads to some real character development where he’s concerned. I would really hate to think that they stripped away all of the qualities that made me fall in love with him in the first place this season only to turn it into another situation where he’s magically absolved and seemingly justified in all of the asshole decisions he’s made lately.
This is the perfect opportunity for character growth here, and it would be a real shame if they ended up squandering this opportunity for his development. Because if they end up glossing over the things he’s done this season, then they’ve pretty much ruined the character for me for good and that’s pretty sad, you know? I dunno, I know I’m rambling here but I just wanted to say that I can relate with you about missing the Dean that I fell in love with and I hope at some point that we can get him back. Or at least have him make some changes for the better because as it stands right now I’m having a really hard time liking the guy and it’s a bit upsetting as a long-time fan of this show.
