June 23, 2020 - Crowned Lapwing or Crowned Plover (Vanellus coronatus)
Found in open areas, including recently burned and other short grasslands, these plovers live in eastern and southern Africa. They forage in small flocks for termites, ants, and other invertebrates. They nest on the ground, lining shallow depressions with plant materials and other debris. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks, which can leave the nest shortly after they hatch.
#Feathursday “Name That Bird” Answer
Today we have a Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinica) and a Crowned Lapwing (Vanellus coronatus).
The Purple Gallinule likes to hang out in the marshes of the southeastern United States, hugging the Gulf of Mexico down to Central America and the Caribbean. Their elongated toes allow them to walk carefully among the floating plants they feed on and nest in.
The Crowned Lapwing is a resident of eastern and southern Africa. They prefer dry grassland and eat ants and termites. (They are not remotely shorebirds. The resident bird nerd has been scolded for saying so in the “challenge” post. Hopefully, that unintentional misdirection didn’t throw anyone off when trying to identify this bird.)
Congratulations to @uwmspeccoll for identifying the Purple Gallinule!
