I loved a man at war. I remember waking up sweating and alone in a pile of sand every night, when the moon hung itself just past my toes, and when I realized where I was, I remember repenting for my safety.

I loved a man at war and it nearly killed me, too.  I remember vomiting,  feeling the worry  trying to come out of me– trying, and failing. I remember catatonia. 

I loved a man at war and now I love you. Now  I wake up next to you every morning and say those same thank-you, god and mother of god prayers to find you there, because the night before,  when the moon crossed over my body (the way it used to) and I woke up  (the way I used to) you weren’t there either.

But I breathe, because it’s  the morning, and you’re here, breathing,  again, and I am surprised,  again,  and I have to ask you,  crudelis,
