My first time....
....going to sea....came shortly after my fourth birthday -- 59 years ago about now.
My Dad’s U.S. Navy duty station was changing from Hawaii to California....and, then, on to Puerto Rico. (We got around!)
Our very young family sailed back from Honolulu to San Francisco aboard Matson Line’s very classy luxury liner SS Mariposa. (Air travel between California and Hawaii was still in its toddlerhood....and not yet the norm.)
I now know, with benefit of decades of hindsight, and an accumulation of insight over my lifetime, that I had fallen in love -- with the sea and big ships and magnificent sailing machines!
I was four....and had neither the maturity nor awareness to appreciate nor assimilate it yet.....but had already just found my calling in life!
And that little-boy excitement about ships and the sea remains ablaze deep within my spirit to this day. I know it’ll be with me forever.
