Crumbsuckers “Bullshit Society” (April 1984)
Tuesday, May 20: Crumbsuckers, "Jimmie's Dream"
Crossover crawled so metalcore could walk, with Crumbsuckers being one of many bands not around to see their descendants thrive some 15 years later. As it was, “Jimmie’s Dream” was a clear antecedent to what Overcast would attempt nearly a decade later, and therefore what Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and their ilk would actualize a few years after that. The tune was more metallic in its riffing than usual for crossover, and maybe a smidge slower, but Chris Notaro’s snarl and Dan Richardson’s slamming drums were pure hardcore, though the breakdown and shredding solo predicted the future. As was the case with most crossover and indie thrash in the late ‘80s, “Jimmie’s Dream” was poorly recorded and sounded thin as a result, but one could still hear the present and future colliding in real time.
