(from sshorthalt - muse reacting to Pike's death) When she dies its not as though he expected it. She could revive people, she brought life to people, so to have hers taken from her it rocks Scanlan's world in a way other deaths haven't.
He'd move mountains for her, he do whatever he could in his meager bardly powers to get her to come back. After all she worships the Everlight, doesn't that mean her light should shine forever. He asks who he can for help in his task but comes up short. Ironic, that he Scanlan Shorthalt would come up short. He did that alot with Pike, but the one time he would not allow himself to do so, it seemed to be his only option no matter which way he turned.
He is inconsolable for a while. He looses that spark that makes him who he is, because for so long as long as he could remember, really from the day he first laid eyes on her, he burned for her, it was easy to do. She was a spark of light, and life. But with that spark gone, nothing seemed to be able to bring it back for Scanlan.
A part of his heart is with her now, and he is not ashamed that he does not have it. He has boundless love, his heart has been broken, but its always mended itself. Pike was good at mending it, just a look from her at times could make his heart swell and feel whole. She was a cleric in so many more ways than just one. It takes a special magic to mend a heart. Without that magic, Scanlan's heart is forever broken, but he doesn't see it as a bad thing. He knew Pike had his heart long before he even began to act on his feelings. He knew that she would always take a piece of his heart with her wherever she went, he just wasn't ready for it to happen in her death. He should have been all signs pointed to it.
But no one expects death, even those that are fated. It doesn't make them hurt any less. When he finally feels that he can sing again, he creates for her. One more song for her. Her life, her triumphs, her friends, her love, her devotion, and kind soul. When he sings it the first time, for a moment he feels partially better, like it was one last heal from her. And it felt like her. He knows how she feels, how her magic feels by now. He will live out the rest of his days swearing that he felt her one last time, one last small attempt to heal his heart just a little bit even if it was the type of broken heart that can't be healed.
He never forgets her, how could he, why would he want to. He had many lovers in his life, but only one love. And he could never replace that love, or find a substitute for it. Not that he tried very hard anyways. For him it always would be Pike, and he would not tarnish her memory her relationship with him by trying to move on because everyone new that was an impossible task. Pike set a high bar in life, and trying to meet that bar was impossible if you asked him. As it should be for she not only set the bar but raised it herself. No one can come close to the warrior that Pike was.
And if you think he is exaggerating about her in his songs of her deeds, well it took one look at him to know you couldn't exaggerate on Pike because she was everything, especially to him.
My muse is dead. Tell me how yours is dealing with it.
