the "biblically accurate angel" trend is such a perfect encapsulation of a pet peeve i have which is everybody wants to criticize the bible but nobody wants to read the bible. like when people were drawing crazy amalgamations of eyes and wheels talking to mary and saying "be not afraid" and everybody was like omfggg OF COURSE she was scared. like no actually the angel looked like a guy can you read 3 lines of text... they were saying be not afraid because it's scary when a random man suddenly shows up in your house and starts talking to you
Reverend Septimus Crisparkle may be the first clergyman that I've encountered in old timey lit since Henry Tilney to be both good looking and a good person.
A couple of days ago, I encountered a particularly terrible Austen take, which touched on P&P but was more focused on Emma. It’s related to something I see pretty often in fandom and in more pop culture-style takes, but much less often in academia, so I wanted to talk about it here instead of in an academic format.
The context: in Emma, there’s a scene where Jane Fairfax talks about her plan to go into work as a governess by referring to offices that trade in the sale of human intellect (i.e., the governesses’s intellects). Mrs Elton misunderstands this as “a fling at the slave-trade” and rushes to say that her brother-in-law (whom she constantly praises) is pro-abolition. Jane explains that she was talking about the governess trade and the conversation moves on.
The take: wow, Austen is saying abolition is bad! Emma is pro-slavery! Austen was pro-slavery! That’s where Bingley’s and Mr Gardiner’s money is really coming from!
To be clear, this isn’t a terrible “interpretation” (for lack of a better word) because Austen was an unproblematic genius who could do no wrong. I actually do think the interchange in Emma is deeply problematic, but in a more complicated and less clickbait-y way that I’ll explain.

Are you a pride and prejudice or jane eyre person? wuthering heights or sense and sensibility? dracula or frankenstein? 1984 or lord of the flies? the catcher in the rye or to kill a mockingbird?
joke’s on darcy, lizzie happens to be besties with mrs collins so do you know what that means? visits. do you know who mrs collins will inevitably bring WITH her???
mr collins. buckle in for some one-sided conversations on the grandeur of pemberley and how there is but one estate only marginally finer, he thinks you will no doubt agree, which can only be, of course, rosing’s park, which can be viewed by his own very humble abode
they’ll all have their dinner and the women will retreat to another room and darcy will stare very, very imploringly to his wife to please, stay. like, please. this man doesn’t shut up. surely you want to talk to him. let’s tag team. please lizzie. he will ask of nothing from you for an entire fortnight if you please actually stay in the same room so mr collins will have SOMEWHERE ELSE to direct his onslaught of ass kissing. lizzie. lizzie.
This is why the Bingleys and the Collinses are invited at the same time.
Meanwhile Lizzie, Jane, and Charlotte are in the parlor, placing bets on how long before Darcy cracks, practically CHUGS his port, and bolts, “WHO WANTS TEA?!?!?!? LET’S JOIN THE LADIES AND HAVE TEA!!!!!!”
Darcy at the table counting down the 45-ish minutes until it’s socially acceptable to retreat to the drawing room
i feel very stongly that elizabeth 100% would have sworn darcy to eternal secrecy about the fact that he had already proposed once unsuccessfully when she accepted, solely bc you just KNOW mr collins' smug ass would be like, "oh ho ho! huh! so apparently it IS the usual with young ladies to reject the addresses of the man whom they secretly mean to accept when he applies for their favor! hm! interesting!" and then she would be honor-bound to leap over lady catherine's dining table and strangle him
thoughts while watching Pride & Prejudice 2005:
Bingley’s hair could rival that of a member of One Direction
I suppose in a way he was the original Harry Styles
Mrs. Bennet WOULD sell her daughters to One Direction
we should have gotten a slutty wuthering heights adaptation back when everybody was turning public domain folklore and literature into adult films in the 1970s, actually
Mina and Jonathan thinking of one another.
my signature scents according to @syrenki 's principles
My current favorite daydream is about having a wealthy vampiric benefactor (read: gender-neutral “sugar daddy”) who buys me all the ridiculous, expensive perfumes I can find on Fragrantica. And then we sit around all night sniffing them and comparing vampire vs mortal olfactory sensitivity and debating whether the perfumes really do smell like nun’s tears or a car accident that killed a child or whatever
I can finally share this, this is a piece I did for the official book tie in (The Shards Guide to Being Hot & Rich) for the FX series The Shards. I still can’t believe this, this is my first real project 🥹 I really don’t get to do a lot of stuff like this because of my niche.
A note: I did very much do my research for this. You can find sources from the early 80s using the term “punk” to refer to things we would definitely call new wave now. The Preppy Handbook even references so called “punk preps”, that enjoy music like Talking Heads, but obviously through today’s lens we would call that new wave and not punk.
oh my god guys new ebook deals from chrétien de troyes??
