Crystal Verse - Snippet
Cor sat on the edge of his bed, having no idea how he managed to get there. Not after- not after his conversation with Nyx. Whatever he had expected to happen when he had stepped into the hospital room Cor had not been sure. What he could say was that it hadn't been admitting to his sexual orientation. Or lack thereof.
Burying his face in his hands with an audible groan, he felt like a teenager like in those corny romance flicks Clarus had forced them to watch once upon a time. It hurt to think about. The whole situation was nearly too much to deal with.
A shuddering breath left his lips. He needed to keep it together. People needed him to keep it together. Noctis needed his help. There was still more clean up to be coordinated, patrols to be done, and a coronation, which would take place in the near future. Cor forced himself to breathe. In. And out. In. And out.
There was a knock at his bedroom door. He looked up, his customary frown slipping onto his face.
“What?” he barked.
“Stop moping around in there. Dinner is done and Monica came over,” Libertus called through the door.
Grumbling under his breath, Cor stood up, marched to the door, and practically ripped it open.
“Who says I'm moping?” he scowled.
Libertus raised an eyebrow. “Your music.”
Over the radio a female voice crooned something or other to dramatic piano music. Cor had not cared to listen, he had just needed sound to try and drown out Nyx's words whirling around his mind for a few minutes. It hadn't exactly worked. Refusing to be embarrassed by it, Cor turned around to turn the radio off before leaving the room.
Monica sat at the dining table, waiting. The moment she saw him she smiled and stood to greet him. She wore a set of sturdy work clothes that were easier for physical labour than what she usually wore.
“Cor,” she said, “it is good to see you inside your home for once.”
“As if you work any less than me,” he shot back, eyes warm.
A grin lit up Monica's face. Libertus set down a large pot between them. Its contents smelled heavenly. With deft hands the Galahkar began to fill bowls with a kind of thick vegetable soup. A basket of dark bread already sat on the table.
“Alright, I made some qühsdruhm kahtu of the not spicy variant. There's enough to last a few days, so it'll only need to be heated up slowly,” Libertus said.
“You are a very good cook, Libertus,” Monica complimented.
“Thanks,” Libertus said with a shrug. “Comes with the territory.”
Both Lucians looked at him in question.
“My Clan. Traditionally we're mostly brewers and inn keepers. Knowing how to cook is a natural consequence, I guess.”
For a long moment there was silence as they ate. The soup – Cor could not remember what Libertus had called it – tasted richly of rout vegetables and something else he could not identify. Unbidden he wondered if Nyx could also cook this well.
“How far along are the preparations for the coronation?” Cor asked to distract himself from that thought.
