Motivational Monday: "Let Me Google That For You: Four Great Must Read Books on the Makeup/Hair Industry" by Margina Dennis
Hey aspiring and newer makeup/hair stylists out there in creative land! I'm talking to you! As someone who started in the biz when dinosaurs were still roaming the earth, I didn't have the internet and resources and that you are so fortunate to have today. There is so much GOOD information out there that will give you a baseline of how things work in the business; the ability to speak intelligently when contacting other artists to assist, photographers to shoot with, etc. Established artists actually LIKE when you take the initiative, do research, and THEN ask questions. It shows us that you are serious about putting in the time and effort. Unfortunately, many folks aren't looking for info what will help to get them pointed in the right direction, so I've decided to put some of it in one place!
Here are four books I have read personally read and feel the information is worthwhile. Hell, sometimes I pull these out as a refresher because knowledge is power! I challenge you to take the time and read up!!!!
1. The Complete Film Production Handbook by Eve Light Honthaner - If you want a better understanding of film, TV and commercials including terminology, what each crew member does, unions, etc. this book is invaluable.
2. Shortcuts to a Successful Career As a Hairstylist or Make up Artist in the Fashion and Entertainment by Diana Schmidtke - Written by a celebrity makeup artist that has worked on A-list celebs like John Hamm and George Clooney. Unfortunately this book is seven years old but, it still has some good tidbits on what goes into working in fashion and entertainment. http://www.shortcutsthebook.com/
3. Makeup Artist Money Manual: A Simple, Step-by-step Guide to Your Long Lasting, Lucrative Career In Wedding Makeup Artistry by Theresa Amundsen . A new find for me. This book is not just good for bridal artist, but for any makeup/hair artists. http://www.amazon.com/Makeup-Artist-Money-Manual-Step/dp/1495306607
4. Hair Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide, 6th Edition by Crystal Wright This is the first book I read about the industry and has proven to be an invaluable reference piece! There is also great info for those who want to be manicurists and fashion stylists in the industry. http://www.makeuphairandstyling.com/#!shop/cmt8
All of these books will give you a good insight about the industry and what to expect. And after doing that if you are still needing assisting, or have been doing this for a while and are feeling stuck, there are many that are more than happy to give a helping hand: http://www.glossible.com/glossible-biz-consulting/ This is a guaranteed way to get a response to get help from people who have been able to have successful careers in different areas of the industry.
