A daring rescue mission over southern Iran turned into a narrow escape on April 3, 2026, when USAF HH-60G Pave Hawks were struck by ground fire and MANPADS. The helicopters were operating deep in hostile territory to retrieve a downed F-15E Strike Eagle crew. While one pilot has been safely rescued, the fate of the second remains unknown as search operations persist. Supported by HC-130 tankers in low-altitude refueling maneuvers, the damaged Pave Hawks managed to return with all crew members unharmed.

58 years ago today, the legendary Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low took to the skies for the first time. A workhorse of USAF CSAR and special operations, it set the standard for long-range, all-weather rescue missions well into the 2000s.
