thinking back to how almost everybody in csm part 1 has some form of family issues going on in their lives

aki used to be neglected as a child because of his chronically ill brother before he lost them all. denji was motherless and his father was implied to be abusive before he died. kobeni's family uses her as a money-making machine to fuel her brother's college fees. arai's mom is an alcoholic. himeno was concerned for her old father's safety. makima's family was the fucking government and she had beef with her own sisters.

and like angel and power were probably the most chill when it comes to family problems but angel's family died later on and power's only family was a cat she found

then you've got katana man who had beef with a fucking minor because said minor murdered his oppressive grandpa. reze never had parents and was raised to be a soldier. aldo, joey and their brother all lost their family and coped with it by believing they're immortal. yoshida and kishibe have a weird father-son type relationship going on (it's not clear if they're related tho). santa claus adopted 3 children and then sacrificed two of them for the hell devil.

International Assassins Arc thoughts from my bsky.

Don't have the energy to make a whole ass post for it now but posting this before I forget.

Thinking bout intl.ass arc again in the context of ignorance and immortality, the three immortal brothers' "immortality" in their survival and the weight of their deeds as a parallel to hykw fam's plot armour and the "normal" they can afford in their survivability and status. (being harder to kill as non-humans + Aki's competence as a devil hunter under PS)

The swift and easy way Kurose and Tendou were killed by guns, humans the way the first iteration of SD4 were, the differences and similarities in Kurose's and Aki's "normal" overlaying Aldo's guilt in their shared brotherhood leading to why they don't go with the "normal" path. Despite Aldo being "not a pro" in Yoshida's eyes.

The capacity for guilt, for love as the mark of being human in Santa's creation of the perfect doll which in turn robs a human of their agency and personhood in their transformation into one as a complete tool.

That Aki is faced with the reality that the fiends are not really "hard to kill" when faced with the Darkness Devil as they drop like flies next to his human colleagues, even Quanxi's powerlessness against it despite what she's capable of.

And it in turn returns him to the dread and fear of loss once more as he remembers what happened with Himeno (the moment his "normal" was emphasised to us) the uncertainty of his fate as he remains one of the few remaining ones as Darkness approaches him leaving him for last.

And I imagine at the time of ch. 65's release there's the belief that this could be Aki's "worst death" given the brutality of the situation and his inability to stop it coming for him too. But he survives yet again! Because this is not what his "worst death" entails.

That the twist of his worst death is what it brings to Denji, who was regarded as a monster by Santa bc she can't understand him, who scares her with his incomprehensibility (Kishibe's "screws loose") who she believes lack the intelligence to comprehend the horror of "death".

Denji's ignorance being what shields him from the burden of loss and guilt, free from sentiment as Kishibe's ideal for a devil hunter. The ignorance Quanxi encourages to make it easier for him to kill the human-like dolls. That what makes Aki's death so terrible is the awareness of the pain it brings.

Aki himself shielded from the ramifications of his death in his ignorance from the way his mind was subsumed as he himself completely becomes Makima's puppet and tool because of his love, his guilt. Because this is his purpose, his future.

What he was kept alive for as he's kept in the dark in his death. That Makima's advice for Denji to take down the Gun Fiend is to not think about anything.

That Kishibe and Quanxi's backstory in Buddy Stories opens with the line that the word "darkness" refers to the uncertainty of an unknown future be it good or bad, but that it's commonly mistaken to refer to a bad future just around the corner.

The latter definition being what Kishibe prefers as the base of his cynicism as a devil hunter. Darkness as fear of ignorance vs fear from awareness.

That intl.ass ends with the conclusion of the three immortal brothers, Quanxi and Santa by having Aldo himself mimic the dolls in their pain and their chanting, he who told Kurose's friend about what it means to be a "pro", to be "immortal", ruthless, soulless, emotionless haunted by his guilt of taking Kurose's life leading into the next page where people were transformed into dolls.

The pain tied to Santa as she burns in the "illumination" of knowledge in her Darkness fueled doll body. Quanxi's "death" occurring in the dark of the night as Kishibe blinds himself to her fate as she begs for the life of those she loves with the brutalisation of her own body offered in exchange.

That she too can't bear to kill the doll Pingtzi and Long became because of her love. Kishibe's selective ignorance to viewing her corpse because of the sentimentality he feels for her.

This turned into a whole thread anyways but these are just scattered thoughts cobbled together, I'll make a better post about it someday!!

Side note, it's interesting that Santa immediately gets jumped on by Denji in his "Light Power" strategy right after Quanxi's display of sentimentality towards doll Pingtzi because she can't ignore what Pingtzi was to her.

Denji telling Santa he's not a fool bc he watches educational TV as he uses his chains to bind Santa and transfer the light from his body to her as part of his strategy. Applying himself with his powers as Reze advised him to and what he used to defeat Reze too, Denji being taught to think for himself, the wisdom he gains from Reze forming his sentiment towards her too.

Bonus thoughts.

Also thinking about Santa and Three Immortal Brothers parallels in their contracts/abilities based on touching a human and the mere defiling of their bodies that come with it.

Santa transforms people into objects and uses them like so, the immortal brothers touch corpses and wear their skin, overwriting their personhood and identity with their own for their own purposes.

Their comfort in touching and treating the deceased this way from the people they kill informed by their ingrained inhumanity in the context of guilt and feeling.

That contracting the Doll Devil allows one to disassociate with their body and decentralise their psyche and their senses too. (which is enhanced by Darkness)
