My favorite thing Fujimoto does has to be when he uses subtle imagery to get the point across in one chapter and then just has a character state the point out loud in the next. I fucking love this manga.

Plenary: Karla Jackson Brewer

I enjoyed the poetic and empowering words of Ms Jackson-Brewer. Like her I often find myself struggling with the question Who am I? and What is my purpose? particularly now more than ever. The adjustment to college especially Rutgers, was very difficult for me because I often felt I was going through the motions with no direction. I particularly connected with her message on transformation in that our definition of ourselves is an interdependent system of our understanding of ourselves and the environment around us. To answer our overwhelming questions of identity encourages to acknowledge the “interconnected webs” of our lives that help us find ourselves. I also enjoyed her value of self care which seems to get lost in our lives. Her story telling style was a different and interesting approach.

What happens when there is ignorance within a minority group?

Caitlyn Jenner has recently opened up about her transition on her new show I am Cait. Caitlyn considers herself a novice activist within the transgender community. She acknowledges the fact that she does not know much about the transgender community but is eager to learn. However when expressing a push for equality among the transgender community she forgets about the struggle of others particularly the fight among the LGTB community for same sex marriage. In no way am I asking for her to change her opinion on same sex marriage her opposition against it to me is not as alarming as her lack of empathy. She herself lives in a world that where her opportunities are limited. Seeing that the experience is similar in the sense that transgender people and homosexuals are not held to the same respect as the majority you would except for Caitlyn to at the least empathize with the same sex marriage struggle. Her distinction between what qualifies as a pressing issue for equality is concerning because it degrades the efforts of others in their fight for equality. Caitlyn gave a beautiful speech about the need for equality among transgender people but neglects to consider the right for homosexual individuals.  She expressed the fact the transgender youth is endanger because of the lack of support and positivity offered to them but I believe the same could be said for homosexuals,blacks and immigrants and other minority groups. In my personal opinion the least she can do is try to understand their experiences. By doing that Caitlyn strengthens her campaign. Rather than putting one campaign over another I believe we should acknowledge their differences but support one another in our fight for equality. After all there is greater strengthens in numbers.
