If you attend public college/university in Southern California, here’s a secret from a former insider:

They’re graduation rates are waaaay down and it looks really bad on the schools. So to compensate, they are now pressuring all of their students to register for 15 credit units each semester.

Full time is 12 credit units, and many schools DO NOT provide financial aid for more than those 12 credit units. Please double check the financial aid policies at your school before registering for such a large course load.

College has so thoroughly killed my desire to learn and improve as a person.

Take coding, for example. I want to learn to code. I want to learn more about computers. I know how I learn best and I would like to pursue that independently, taking on self-directed projects and trying and failing and trying something different until I understand. I have no doubt that I could teach myself. None at all.

But let's say it turns out I have a talent for it. Let's say I end up being really good at learning different coding languages and I decide that maybe I want to make a career out of it. I'd have to get a degree, one way or another.

And then you know what? I'd be punished for everything I learned. There would be no "testing out" of the Basics classes. I'd have to fork over the money and do them again. Show up to lectures on repeated material. Do assignments designed to teach me something I already know. Possibly do poorly on said assignments because of lack of time and motivation. And so on and so forth.

And it's all just... incredibly disheartening. I don't dare pursue an interest because if it turns out to be something I love, it leads back to a series of hoops designed to cater to an average that fits no one perfectly and costs everyone more than they're worth.

I wanted to be an English major because I loved the English language and felt like I had a natural talent for it. I thought it would be a good idea to study what I loved. Instead I spent almost six years recycling essays I wrote in high school because there was no way to credit me for work I had already done. I almost failed Engish 1A because health issues prevented me from physically appearing at some of the lectures. Lectures on the basic structure of an essay.

It makes me so tired and so angry.

The California State University system should institute tuition increases for California residents and out-of-state students, begin year-round academic schedules and provide campus funding based on graduation and other rates, a new panel suggests.

California has prestigious public universities, but its state budget, public schools and public university system are so fouled up, at the moment no one in his or her right mind would move to California for education.

So it's looking more and more like I'll be transferring back to a state school in California after this year, due mostly to financial strains. Really mixed feelings on this (though I think some of it is me nostalgically clinging to last year), and not sure how it'll effect the rest of this year. But the real question is where the hell would I go?

Obviously the best state school for film stuff is UCLA, but I almsot guarantee I couldn't get in there (Also my family would hate me. But I can live with that.) 

Then there's other UC's like Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara... I dunno.

And Cal States, the big two I'd look at are probably CSU Long Beach and CSU Northridge. And USC, which isn't a state school, but my mom seems to think they'd hook me up on financial aid because I'm a double legacy (along with several of my cousins). 

Not really sure what the best path is. I know I'm not going to be able to major in production design or something, and a general film major might be my best bet. But if I'm going to be studying the production design stuff after I graduate, does it matter if the school has a film department?

Keep in mind, I still have yet to talk to Emerson's financial aid department, and am still in talks with them about this whole IDIP/Build Your Own Major thing. So who the hell knows.
