“My existential and visual representations of my view of Bakersfield are the product of growing up in a low income, Hispanic household, one of six children. My family did not have a lot, and we still work hard to afford this view of our neighbors’ houses and thriving yards. Although I am in a similar house, surrounded by neighbors with palm trees and flowers, my yard appears empty. In Full Palms II, 2019 the viewer is given more context as to why I would rather look past my yard. It is revealed that in the first painting, I “cropped” the image, and in its counterpart I chose to include the green, collapsed above-ground pool that consumes the frame.”
