A behind-the-scenes Call the Midwife season 14 picture confirms that filming is well under way on the new season.

"What better place to show you our progress than in the Nonnatus House dining room - perhaps the location most central to our drama, and the room where all our stories really happen.

"That remark may seem surprising. Surely the birthing room is the most important driver of the action? Or the darkest parts of Poplar?

"Yes, those places are important. But the one indispensable scene in every episode is the place where our characters can share their thoughts together, and comprehend things that have happened to them as a community.

"It's the place where we shed light on our characters' personalities - how they might interact with each other. Also, it's a place for humour. And cake!

"In this shot, director Syd Macartney discusses the important elements of the forthcoming dining room scene with Jenny Agutter (Sr Julienne) and the team.

"A dining room scene takes longer to film, because there are usually lots of people present. Each character will have their moment for dialogue, or a reaction to someone else's words. In an ensemble drama like ours, every character has something to say - even if they're not speaking."

Call the Midwife latest: summer recess! Hello all! This week has been the last week of filming before we take our regular summer break on the production of Series 13 - and there has been a definite end-of-term feel to proceedings… Down in the clinic, our brilliant Meghan Cusack (Nancy) felt inspired to swap roles with trusty sound man Tom so she could try her hand at operating the boom microphone (I'm not sure she's quite got the hang of it…) Meanwhile, over at the Turner house, Patrick and Shelagh (Stephen McGann and Laura Main) sent us a summery kitchen selfie before they head off on their holidays ☀️😎 Filming days are long, and the hours are variable - sometimes the crew will need to shoot from early daytime into the very late evening to catch essential night scenes. Weeks of this, away from family, can take its toll - and so a good break in high summer allows the crew enough time to see their folks and get away for a holiday. The benefits to morale - and to the subsequent work - are enormous. x When we return, we have the second half of Series 13 to shot, which will take us all the way through to November. And then we begin the countdown to Christmas!! The spirit on set is wonderful, and the stories we are filming are powerful and moving. We look forward to showing you…. Leonie Elliott, star of BBC drama Call the Midwife, has thanked fans following their response to her emotional storyline in season 12 episode 2.

Radio Times: Call the Midwife's Leonie Elliott thanks fans after Lucille's emotional exit

Elliott reacted to the emotional scenes aired in season 12 episode 2.

Leonie Elliott, star of BBC drama Call the Midwife, has thanked fans following their response to her emotional storyline in season 12 episode 2, which saw Lucille leave Nonnatus House.

The episode saw Lucille seeking help from Dr Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann) after she had been driven to emotional breaking point. He told her that she was in the midst of a nervous breakdown and that she should rest.

Following this, her husband Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) bought her a plane ticket to Jamaica, where she has gone to visit family for a currently undetermined amount of time.

Taking to Twitter after the episode's emotional scenes had aired, Elliott said: "This season was incredibly difficult to film. Thank you for all your kind words. It's my hope for people watching that if they can see the good in her, maybe they can extend that to people in real life."

She continued: "I care about her deeply. Many share her story of miscarriage and depression, and many share her experience of abuse, racial or otherwise. Many of us face mental health challenges, I hope we can continue to love one another, support and listen to each other. Look after yourselves and each other."

This season has seen Lucille struggle not only with a miscarriage, but also the hostile environment created by the likes of Enoch Powell, as the drama tackled his chilling Rivers of Blood speech.

Elliott has been a part of the show's cast since 2018, when Lucille joined the staff at Nonnatus House in season 7. It has not currently been revealed how long she will be absent from the show, or whether this marks her character's exit for the foreseeable future.

Behind the Scenes on the Call the Midwife Christmas Special: Happy Trixmas! Just 3 days to go!! 🤩🤩🤩🥳🎄🎅

This year’s Christmas Special sees the return of the divine Trixie Franklin, back from her mercy mission in Portofino, caring for her godmother. And we can guarantee you a very merry Trixmas this year!

Helen says: “The Christmas episode is like a big box of chocolates with shiny lovely wrappers and each story is carefully told. Trixie has a really lovely time this Christmas, it is very romantic…”

In this episode we see Trixie and Matthew making arrangements for Christmas together in Poplar. They also enjoy a romantic stroll by the river – although filming that particular scene was perhaps a little less romantic than the end result!

Helen says: “I went on location with Olly Rix who plays Matthew and we had this very beautiful scene by Battersea Bridge with these beautiful lights. It was very gorgeous to film and will look brilliant, but we were filming on a Bank Holiday Monday when lots of pubs were open late and lots of loud people were outside the pub shouting obscenities at us; if you listen hard enough you might hear them!”

Phew! Thankfully we can confirm that the end result looks PERFECT :-)

But how does Helen herself feel about being such a longstanding staple of British Christmas as one of televisions most iconic characters?

Helen: “It is lovely that we’ve become part of the Christmas Day menu. People always say they sit down on Christmas Day and watch it. It is so flattering and feels unreal that we’ve been doing these so long! It’s funny to think back to the first series when we didn’t do a Christmas special, and how far we’ve come. ”

We don’t think there’s any character on Call the Midwife that’s come quite so far as Trixie Franklin has in the last twelve years. And we can promise you her journey isn’t over yet….
