In my remarks, I challenge our use of the word “futurism” as a tool for liberation (i.e. #Afrofuturism, #Asiafuturism) and ask that we either consider new terms or make/publish/announce clear distinctions between the futurism we identify with and the anti-women, pro-nationalist elements mandated in the original inception of Futurism from Italy that eventually fueled fascism. Don’t get it twisted — I love my P-Funk, Sun-Ra and Astroboy. But if we agree that it’s problematic to host events at former plantations or support sports logos that appropriate indigenous imagery, we should at least think deeply about associating with a word like futurism, which was originally grounded on violence, nationalism and “scorn for women.” Before u feel a certain way, google “futurism,” read the Futurist Manifesto, and note that #Afrofuturism is a term that was coined by a white guy with no record of work or research within Africana studies or African/American communities.
