An atrium is a square or oblong central hall with an opening in the roof, answered by a impluvium(shallow pool) to collect rainwater. Usually, the atrium was a place for gathering portraits of ancestors. Its open, diaphanous bestows an element of grandeur perceptible at Atrium of the House of the Vettii, Pompei. Cubiculas (Bedrooms) are grouped around the atrium, which precedes to the principal reception room: the tablinum.
