My Little Pony: Rarity (Cuddle Size Amigurumi)
If you have been following my blog for quite sometime now, you might know who Desiree is. Just a recap, Desiree is my dear cousin who is also the owner of Bellebelious. She has always been very kind and supportive ever since Little Yarn Friends started. She was the one who I had my 1st art exchange with, (you can read more about it “Here" and “Here”).
A few months ago, Desiree texted me and asked if I could crochet a cuddle size pony for her daughter, Isabelle. Rarity from My Little Pony is Isabelle’s favourite cartoon character and she mentioned that they’ve searched high and low all around Singapore but could not find any My Little Pony plush toys for their daughter. So she came to me believing that I will be able to hook some magic for her precious daughter. :)
I do not have much knowledge about these ponies. So I went to read up and find more pictures of Rarity as references and came across many beautiful pictures on the Internet, like the one above.

This is my first time crocheting something this big! At times, I was so close to giving up because half of the time I was struggling to get the proportions right. This is definitely something out of my comfort zone and I knew that making the mane and tail would be a big challenge as well. To be honest, I did not have much confidence that Rarity would turn out nice.
Nonetheless, I kept on going despite the slow progress. Thankfully, my adorable niece is a sweet and patient little girl. She waited patiently for months and did not rushed me for her pony.
After many many days and countless stitches, at last I managed to complete Rarity. Hooray! This calls for a little celebration because she is the biggest amigurumi I’ve created to date. Standing approximately 36cm tall and 34cm wide, I think Rarity did turned out to be a perfect cuddle toy hey? Here’s a picture of me holding Rarity so you can have a better picture of how big she is. She is so big and cuddly! :)
Here are some pictures that I took during the making of Rarity. These pictures will be of great help if you have plans to crochet your own Rarity too.
The picture above shows the various parts of Rarity which include the head, body, front legs and back legs. The pictures below shows her ears, neck, horn, mane and tail. I will go into more detail when I share the crochet pattern in my upcoming post. :)
I did some trial and errors for the mane and tail, trying out different options like latch hook and plaits. But I finally went with what I am most confident and comfortable with, which is the normal single crocheted style mane and tail. I feel this gives the mane and tail more volume and it helped me achieved the closest look after some bending and sewing.
Here are pictures of the cut out felt eyes and diamonds in light blue, black and white. This is another tricky part that took me a pretty long time to complete. I had to search for more Rarity cartoon images before I could decide on how my cut out felt eyes would look like.
As I always say, the face determines if a creation “make it" or “break it". So I spent a lot of time perfecting the position of the eyes and make sure they are as symmetrical as possible. Then, I used some left over black yarn and a yarn needle to craft out her eye lashes before sewing on her purple mane.
It was lovely to see how Rarity gradually transformed in front of my eyes. It sure brought me a lot of satisfaction completing this project.

The most anxious moment has come, that is to pass Isabelle her new cuddle handmade pony. Are you ready?
And she loved it! Yay! :D
The day when I brought Rarity over to her house, I saw Isabelle’s face lighted up at that very instant when she first laid eyes on her new little yarn friend. Her priceless expression and joy that I saw made all the long hours and endless stitching worth it.
Look at Isabelle smiling happily with her new cuddle buddy! Mission accomplished. :)
