General Fusion will enter into a long-term lease with UKAEA following the construction of a new facility to host the FDP under an agreement announced today by UK Science Minister Amanda Solloway. “This new plant by General Fusion is a huge boost for our plans to develop a fusion industry in the UK, and I’m thrilled that Culham will be home to such a cutting-edge and potentially transformative…

The UK Government has committed £220m for the conceptual design of a fusion power station - the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) - in a move towards zero-carbon, safe and abundant commercial fusion electricity.
During the Thatcher years, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, which had been the coordinating body of a world-leading national fission energy industry, was reduced to little more than a support organization for the European fusion research center at Culham. Now, with Britain pulling out of the European Union (and hence EURATOM), and probably facing a severe economic contraction, is it really likely that a full-scale commitment to fusion energy will be forthcoming?
Like all such proposals, it bears watching. But fission power is already “zero-carbon, safe and abundant”, for those who care about such things.
I was waiting for The Duke of Gloucester at Culham on the 29th April 1990 and treated this one of an Inter City liveried HST as a practice picture. It now seems to have become almost a historical shot with their gradual replacement by IET’s. There is a noticeable rundown in maintenance and cleaning as more of the maintenance staff either leave for Hitachi on better pay or lose motivation altogether. It’s a great pity that these 40 year old warriors won’t go out in the style they deserve after such sterling service.

My first vlog documents my first attempt at Magnet Fishing and also visits a Pilbox (ww2 field defence) in the village of Culham near Abingdon.
