Last month, we listened to a song from a new electronic artist out of London named CULKIIN which left us in deep meditative thought. Head evokes those long blurry nights out, when memories over the course of many hours start to bleed into one another, leaving you questioning your life and what’s to come when the sun comes up. Surprisingly, it’s this rather existential tune that Hippie Sabotage has chosen for their latest flip. The California duo give the song a droopy nebulous, syrupy viscous makeover that takes it into future vibes territory, one tactfully infused with a breakbeats percussive roll. Their approach on Head befits the mind trip tendencies of the song to a tee. It goes Straight To My Head.

It’s been a long night. You’ve been out for hours upon hours, visiting club after club, dancing the night away, throwing back drinks, meeting new faces and seeing old familiar ones whose names you often can’t recall. You’re exhausted, the street lights are glowing a muted neon, and your vision is hazy. You look back at the night and it’s been a massive blur.  What will remain of tonight when the sun comes up? Will everything be the same? Has anything changed? London’s CULKIIN captures that feel perfectly with his woozy debut, Head. The chill electronic song is full of wist, wonder, and contrition, its shadowy introspection, alongside its garage percussion and skittering shuffling, reminding me of some of Jamie xx’s handiwork. CULKIIN’s melodic blend of laid back house and infectious pop goes straight to my head.
