Continued from part 1
Wild white indigo. These grow seed pods and then break off and tumbleweed around to spread their seeds.

Summer in the prairie Part 2
Yesterday, I hiked through the restored prairie at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois and the Wolf Road Prairie in Westchester, Illinois. The grasses are getting taller, the birds are flitting around snacking all day, the wildflowers are posing and the floodwaters have finally receded (leaving behind lots of messy spots). Here are some of my photos from Wolf Road Prairie.
You’ll see a monarch butterfly on a prairie blazing star. In addition to the blazing star, you’ll thistle, rattlesnake master, Jerusalem artichoke, nodding wild onion, wood lily, grey-headed coneflower, and Culver’s root.

One of my photos from my recent hike in the Fermilab Prairie. I think the blurring of the foreground enhances the pastel colors in the background. The flowers are monarda (bee balm) and Culver’s root. Photo by rjzimmerman July 31, 2019
