Love mornings like this. Cold. Crisp. Clear skies. Countryside. Reminds me of my childhood 🙌 #cumberlandlodge #drkhiz #britishcountryside #earlymornings (at Cumberland Lodge) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpHGH5oBnIB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1hpw51jsz38i7

A student blog about our recent K+ residential trip to Cumberland Lodge
The K+ Academic Retreat to Cumberland Lodge was certainly a weekend to remember! Although many of us didn’t know each other when we first met on Friday, the coach ride to Windsor quickly dispelled any fears of being lonely with a rather loud rendition of some Queen classics!
We were all in awe of the beautiful surroundings upon our arrival in Windsor Great Park, and were treated to a delicious dinner at the Lodge. Indeed, any Cumberland Lodger will tell you that the food was one of the key topics of conversation throughout the weekend! We then had our first session on the ethics of punishment and found out some surprising statistics concerning the prison population, prompting some interesting debates.
The next morning we went on a walk and had the opportunity to take some photos of the lovely country landscape, before taking part in a morning of academic sessions. Firstly we looked at the issue of nuclear disarmament and had to argue our case before the PhD students, who formed the UN. We then had a careers session, where we learnt about our personality and work ethic in order to determine the job sector that would be best suited to us. The personality test was a particular favourite as it assigned us to an animal which best represented our character, turning the room into a zoo of dolphins, barn owls, clown fish and much much more!
My favourite part of the day was the poetry session, although as a prospective English student, I realise that this is a little biased. Nevertheless, not only did we learn about the origins and definition of poetry, we also had the opportunity to write and perform some of our own! The poems ranged from melancholic reminisces to witty rhymes, and were all extremely creative and entertaining!
Next we had an extremely useful session on the infamous personal statements, providing us with some great advice on what to include. We were also lucky enough to have a Q&A with some current students to reassure us about the cost of university and the various challenges it presents. The evening concluded with a rather bizarre game of croquet in the garden and an obligatory cup of tea!
On Sunday morning we looked at the various treatments for heroin addiction, and challenged some commonly held views before settling down for a session on the development of Romantic Comedies. It was a wonderful weekend which challenged our preconceptions and allowed us to make great friends, so we were all very sad to be leaving. Thank you K+ and Cumberland Lodge!

A wonderful time and sad to be leaving...but taking friends for life with us.
Why should there be a link between masculinity and the appreciation of art?
