There came a deep cracking sound from the back of the cold woman’s throat. Almost like the sound of expanding ice, her breaths hoarse — almost like she was choking for air. But the voice that followed held the faintest trace of an accent - the accent her beloved Lord Commander had held upon his tongue when teaching the common tongue to her. And it was the common tongue - through b r o k e n.
She rose a hand, tentatively tapping at her throat in gesture as she spoke. ”I am not understanding your words, human throat.”
Braxton/Sara - OTP: 20 grilleds
Braxton's family home had always seemed so bleak to him. Unless Sara or Charlie were over to hang out with Scarlett and him, all conversation was stilted between the twins and their parents. Not having his parents there was a relief. It was Braxton's intention to get away from college for the weekend and just be able to reaction. He'd never thought about inviting Sara along with him until the opportunity presented itself. Though Braxton Melrose had never been known as a sensitive guy, he had wanted his weekend away to be a time that allowed him to reflect on everything happening in Devil Town, on top of his own personal shortcomings. However, Sara Cunningham was his best friend. If he was about to have some profound revelation, Braxton didn't need to question whether or not her presence was needed.
Rummaging through the Melrose kitchen fridge, Braxton's dark brown eyes widened as soon as he spotted a large block of cheese on the third shelf. He didn't hesitate to grab it and immediately search the pantry for a fresh loaf of bread. One thing that was always on Braxton's mind was food, another reason he made an effort to work out frequently. The only thing Braxton had ever excelled at making was grilled cheese. He approached the kitchen bench, placing down all the ingredients down before glancing out the window and seeing Sara Cunningham in the old Melrose tree house. An involuntary smile moved across his lips as he watched her, his eyes lingering far too long. The image of her up there brought back a collection of happy memories, reminding him of how close the two once were.
Braxton placed the grilled cheese on two separate places after he'd finished making it. The delicious smell filled the kitchen, distracting Braxton's senses as he opened the fridge to grab two beers. This was his ideal night - kicking back with a friend, who just so happened to be incredibly attractive, while drinking some cold beer and eating his all-time favourite meal. By the neck, he held both the beers while attempting to juggle the plates in his free hand. He headed out the back door and into the backyard. Braxton placed the plates on the outdoor table, climbing up to the tree house while still holding onto the beers. Popping his head up, he promptly placed the bottles down on the floor as he said, "Hold on a sec, I need to bring up your surprise treat." Flashing her a cheesy grin, Braxton's head ducked back down, jumping down onto the grass. Eventually, he managed to get up to the tree house while holding onto the two plates that had his still hot grilled cheese on them.
"Ta-da!" Braxton bit his lip, crawling over to put one plate down in front of Sara. "I know you probably didn't expect anything less from me. Is there any meal better than grilled cheese though, seriously?" Before daring to take a bite, Braxton tossed Sara a bottle of beer and took the other for himself. "I mean, sure, some gourmet home cooked Italian meal would be nice, but..." Braxton said, grabbing a piece of his grilled cheese and taking a bite of it. After chewing and swallowing a large chuck, Braxton let out a sigh. "It has absolutely nothing on this." Popping off the top of the beer, he took a sip to wash down the grilled cheese with. "Maybe we could order some pizza later when we go back into the house, but that's only if you're up for pigging out." Being around Sara felt so natural for Braxton. He didn't need to exert a false sense of superiority to feel good about himself or continually make sexual puns to get her attention.
Self-Para - Writing Prompt
Stimulus: Regret
"Congratulations, man."
He didn't know why he had said that. Moreover, Braxton Melrose didn't know why he wasn't convinced that he was genuinely pleased to hear Christian and Sara were now a couple. It must have been because he was losing a wingman. Sebastian was in a relationship, which left Christian as being his guy friend who he could crudely talk about women with. Of course this was not the case but Braxton's small mind could not search for any other plausible alternative.
Beneath the superficial layer beneath his tanned skin, Braxton could feel emotions bottling beneath the surface. It wasn't about Christian, it was about Sara. It had always been about her. To some degree, he was protective over her. Though he'd never be able to effectively fend for himself, it wouldn't be a leap to say he'd die for her.
When she almost fell out of the treehouse when they were younger, Braxton had pulled her away from the edge and in turn fell, breaking his arm. It had hurt a lot, as well as being uncomfortable and itchy, but having Sara decorate his cast distracted him from all that. And while he had never told her, she was his best friend.
Braxton truly believed Sara should be with someone who deserves her. Christian was a good enough guy yet there was an unfamiliar anguish that resided in Braxton. In years to come, he continued trying to bury these feelings. He didn't deserve her, Braxton was sure of this.
"Sara and I have yet to seal the deal."
When Christian had filled Braxton in on his and Sara's sex life, Braxton felt an unusual amount of happiness. If he was intelligent enough to analyze his emotions, Braxton would easily be able to realize that he loved Sara and these feelings were evidence of that. But the Melrose family had never embraced love and, for the most part, Braxton had absolutely no understanding of it.
Things worsened what Christian and Sara would act cute in front of him. It wasn't intentional, how were they supposed to know he was pining for her when Braxton didn't even know he was? It was like a knife, twisting in his back. Her hand on his shoulder, his lips grazing against her cheek. Eventually, it became easier to numb himself to it, opposed to confronting what he felt.
A pang of regret hit him every once in awhile. That boy holding Sara could have been him. He'd never taken the chance, never wanting to be vulnerable. He had lost her without even trying.
When they broke up, there was a gleam of hope within Braxton. A new year, a fresh start. They could be something. Maybe. They flirted and smiled, enough to shatter Braxton's small, tender heart. Distracted by her golden curls, Braxton had been too blind to notice the growing closeness between Sara and Sebastian. And all while Braxton had spent his summer bedding different high school juniors, Sara never transcended from being anything other than a friend in his eyes. It was easier to keep things as they were, never daring to test the waters and reveal his emotions that grew more evident as each day wore on.
At the end of summer, something happened. The odds were in Braxton's favor. All he remembered from that drunken night was holding Sara Cunningham's glorious body against his, tasting her lips and exploring her body. It was heaven. When they had sex, it triggered feelings that he had never felt while being inside someone.
He could feel his entire being pulsating within her, his body completely focused on being there with her and his mind and heart consumed with love. It wasn't just sex to him, it was love. He didn't say it out loud, knowing the words wouldn't come out. Braxton Melrose was in love with Sara Cunningham and he always had been.
"Sebastian and Sara, dating?"
Not long after school started, Braxton found out. Sebastian and Sara were a couple. He knew before it became widespread. Every once in awhile, he'd see them hold hands or hug. The knife that twisted against his skin returned. It was far more painful this time. He didn't blame Sara or Sebastian. Like the time before, they didn't know how Braxton felt. For so long, Braxton had been able to play it off. Sara was his friend and, sure, they had sex once, but it wasn't a big deal.
History is repeating. It is becoming harder for Braxton to ignore reality. He increasingly tries to toughen himself up, like having sex with dozens of girls will help him. Every attempt he makes fails. Braxton is constantly reminded that he is alone. Braxton rejected the idea of having a girlfriend, yet all he has ever wanted to be is Sara Cunningham's boyfriend. No matter where he ran, every turning point led him straight back to her. Braxton is pacing around in circles, an endless spiral of regret and hurt, unable to find the strength to say three little words that would change everything and perhaps turn his fantasies of growing old with her into reality.
Cunningrose // Sway
Tap. Tap. Tap. A moment later the door of the RA's room pull open and Sara plastered that winning smile on her lips. Batting her eyelashes for effect she leaned against the frame. "Hi, I'm so sorry to bother you. I just left my keys in my friends room and their both in class and I am going to be so late for work if I can't get my car keys." She said putting on her best damsel in defense routine. "Is there any way you could let me in, please?" She begged staring up at the older boy with puppy dog eyes now and that seemed to be just enough to get him to bend to her will. "Yeah sure thing kid come on." He said ushering her down the hallway to Sebastian and Braxton's room, pulling out his keys he opened the door. "Make it quick." He said before turning and heading off back to his room. Sara stared after him with amusement at just how easy that was, she thought for sure she'd have to find a way to get ride of him so she could stick around but this guy either was far too trusting or really didn't care. Either way it had worked out in Sara's favor and she quickly closed the door behind her.
Pulling the duffle bag from her shoulder she set in on Braxton's bed and began to pull things out. Glancing up she checked the clock, Sebastian finished up with class in about an hour and by than she would have everything ready. There was actually going to be more than enough time if she was completely honest. He'd made it very clear that he didn't want to just hook up with her, that if they were going to do this he wanted it to be something more than that. He also made it very clear that he wanted their first time together to be special, not a drunken 4am hook up. So Sara was going to take this opportunity to set up the perfect evening for them. After picking up around the room, tossing some of the boys dirty clothes from the floor into the hamper and changing out Sebastian's sheets. Running her fingers over the black silk she was happy with her choice as she smoothed out any wrinkles. When she finally finished setting up the room, there was an assortment of chocolates and champagne on the desk, white rose petals scattered across the silk bed sheets, and a couple dozen candles lit around the room, carefully placed to not be a fire hazard.
Ducking in front of the mirror she checked her appearance as she pulled the trench coat she worn over the revealing cream lingerie she'd bought. Running her fingers through her hair as she fixed any messed up curls, before dabbing at her lips as she checked her make up. Sara was nervous, because while this had seemed like a good idea at the time it was starting to feel a little cliche and over the top. Pacing back and forth she couldn't help but let her thoughts wonder. Her love life had been a mess before this, before Sebastian. She'd been dumped, she'd lost her virginity in a drunken night she couldn't remember, slept with one of her oldest friends, and got fingered by a professor and that was all on top of having feelings for her best friends ex-boyfriend. It was out in the open now and Sara was ready to put everything else behind her and move forward with her life, she hated the misdirection her first months of college had taken. With Sebastian she felt like she was back on track, that she for the first time since coming to college actually had feet on the ground and the stability brought her comfort.
This train of thought came quickly to a halt though when she heard the key in the lock of the door just before the door was pushed open. Smoothing down the invisible lines of her outfit nervously Sara turned with a smile to great Sebastian, he must have been done early with class, which was a slight relief. That is of course until she turned to see Braxton walking through the door. "Braxton!" Sara exclaimed as she jumped in surprise, completely forgetting how she must look right now. "Oh god," Sara muttered, why had she not thought about the fact that Braxton could very likely come back at any time, why had she not anticipated this. Right now she wanted to dig a whole. "Hi, hello, hey, umm... well." Sara rambled as she played with her fingers before she nervously pulled her shaking fingers through her hair, mussing up her curls. "I can explain." Sara began but she just couldn't find the words to describe just what she'd be explain to him.
Cunningrose // Power Struggle
It was a typical Saturday on the Devil Town campus, student's were strewing about campus as they headed out for the night. Older students were headed down town for a the usual pub crawl activities, while the younger students were headed to greek row to enjoy the more savory parts of greek living. Having spent the better part of the last couple of weeks since the explosion locked up in her dorm room or the library, Sara's social life had been seriously lacking. Well minus a little run in she'd had with a certain professor of hers that was. Since that night though Sara had been feeling more restless than ever. So while she had decided on yet another night in of staring at her biochemistry book trying to memorize the metabolic change theorem, she now found herself standing in front of her full length mirror in her dorm room. Tonight she'd decided on a dark wash skinny jeans that clung to her curves, a fitted red tank top that laced up the front, and a cropped leather jacket paired with matching high heeled boots. It was certainly a much riskier look for Sara who was usually seen in her sundresses and cardigans.
The KT house was as usual the perfect place to escape her troubles, while there was tons of people around her, most of them were already too drunk to really care what she was doing and none of her close friends were around to question what she was doing. It was also only a short two block walk from her dorms, grabbing her keys she tucked them in her pocket and left her room. In no time she was standing outside the door of KT house, the music could be heard from a block away and it was clear that inside a raging party was going on. Walking through the front door, Sara headed straight to the kitchen to find herself a drink, it wasn't uncommon for the KT boys provide free booze to Freshman girls in hopes that they would get lucky so getting a drink would be simple. Not to mention she was Charlie's little sister which almost always guaranteed her exactly what she wanted. Filling her cup from the large orange jug filled with jungle juice Sara propered herself up to sit on the empty space of counter top next to the jug and watched the party happen around her as she drank down glass after glass of the jungle juice. While she made casual conversation with people she knew as they wondered over to get another drink Sara hadn't seen anyone that she was extremely close with which was a relief. Although she swore she caught sight of Braxton's perfectly tanned skin and usually messy hair.
She had to have been at least seven or eight cups when she finally decided to slid off the counter top and make her way through the party. Feeling liberated by some new sense of power, she'd mislead herself into believing she could be that kind of girl. Chloe Wentworth wanted to bring her down a few pegs, so be it but Sara was going to do it on her own terms. Right now she was just so tired of everyone thinking she was some perfect little princess, it was unrealistic expectation that she couldn't even begin to live up to and it was just beginning to be too much. College was becoming a huge struggle for Sara because she just wasn't sure where she fit in it all. She was always Charlie's little sister or Jetta's best friend or Christian's girlfriend. Everything always felt like a definition of someone else and without all of that Sara felt like she was free falling in sea of choices and she just couldn't seem to make the right one. With this mixture of confusion and the number of drinks in her system Sara wasn't in her right mind, which would explain how she'd ended up being the drunk girl dancing on the pool table in the billiards room of the KT house.
It didn't take long for a crowd to gather around the table as the watched her dance around the table, flinging her jacket and watching as it caught on the hanging light to her left she giggled and spun around. "Take it off!" Screamed one of the horny college boys who was now watching her with hungry eyes at just what she would do next. A few of the other boys cheered at this idea and Sara just giggled, smiling at them in what she thought to be a flirtatious manner but it was hard saying in her current state. "You mean this?" Sara said coyly as she pointed to her tank top and they cheered once more. "Okay." She said eagerly as she grabbed it from the bottom of the hem and pulled it over her head, throwing it in the face of the boy who had originally yelled for her to take it off. This of course sent the crowd of boys in to a state of chanting to the tune of 'SHOW YOUR BOOBS'. Which Sara once more giggled about as she spun around the table. "Fine, fine," She said with a drunken smile. "You want to see boobs, boobs you will see." Give the people what they want she thought to herself as she place both fingers at the clasp at the front of her bra. Struggling for a moment as she tried to figure out the complicated contraption.
