Unhinged // Sara & Sebastian
It had been one year that Sebastian had been in this city. One year and still everything had changed. In such a short period of time your whole life can be turned around. The ironic thing is, this time last year, to the day, he had been thinking the same thing but for totally different reasons.
It was November. Sebastian was of course used to cold weather, Devil Town had it’s fair share of cold nights and horrible winters, still, winter in New York was different. It was like the cold didn’t matter, didn’t hit you.. It was only an after thought. How could you focus on the cold when everything was so picturesque. The trees, the leaves, the slight bit of frost that hugged the corners of window displays. Even with the decay of the trees, the world never seemed so alive to him. It made him realize New York was the perfect place for him.
He had been left an apartment by his father. Nothing special. A shoe box sized one bedroom in Uptown Manhattan that had been in his family for years. He wouldn’t take his luck for granted, however. Not like Vince would. He agreed to a price with his father, of course taking advantage of his family ties discount and set forward to make New York his new home.
It was an adventure, moving somewhere new, where you knew not a soul. Still, when Sebastian left Devil Town a year ago to travel, the fear of being alone circled around him and had brought him to where he was at this point. It had brought him back to the person he was before everything had happened in Devil Town. He no longer felt anger over what he lost, he wasn’t bitter. He didn’t feel inadequate or the need to be perfect. He felt like himself. The real him. Pieces were missing of course, but Sebastian’s progress was nothing short of a miracle in such a short time.
His last day in Devil Town was a mess. He hadn’t seen Jetta. It would have been too hard. He didn’t want her to know where he was or where he was going. He needed to do this on his own. Instead, his last day was spent with a small group of people in a very intimate party thrown by non-other than Sara. She had been the one who pushed him to leave, to try something new. It was one of the only reasons he felt confident enough to make the choice to leave everyone behind. The next morning she took him to the airport, two hours earlier than he wanted to go which ended up saving his ass. He would have been late and missed his flight if he hadn’t took her advice on when to leave. Not to mention starved without the homemade pack of sweets and treats she had made for him while on the plane.
He left Devil Town, and his old life behind for Europe and in doing so, found the person he had always dreamt of being, the person he was before Daniel’s death.
It had been two weeks that Sebastian had been in New York, he had met a few people, but being back in the States with the comforts he grew up with did bring back memories of everyone he had known. Not to mention it didn’t help that Jonathan Parker’s new “fiction” novel about a small town group of friends surviving after the death of one of their own was piled in every window display or every book store he passed. It was hard not to think about Devil Town. That’s when he saw it. There was a tiny, dirty piece of paper tapped to one of the window displays.
Morning After Dark After Party November 18th, 9PM 79th and 7th. Meet the Author and party in the fashion that can only be described as MAD.
It felt like a sign, like a twist of fate. Sebastian, who was more so a man of science rather than faith, knew better than to turn down this sign. He hurried home and got ready.
The party was surprisingly a formal event. There were paparazzi, cameras everywhere, and even a few TV crews. He wouldn’t be getting in to this, still something drove him to continue walking down the red carpet that led to a husky man with the cliche clipboard you always heard about. Clearing his throat Sebastian simply tried to keep walking, a stupid mistake. Though he was clearly dressed for the part in his slacks, crisp white shirt, and thin black tie (he had looked up the venue and realized his normal long sleeve and jeans wouldn’t do), the way he carried himself showed he was nervous.
The man with the clipboard raised a thick, dark brow at Sebastian, holding out his arm so he couldn’t pass.
"Name?" The man asked, a smug grin on his face.
Sebastian returned the grin.
"Uh, would you believe me if I said Jonathan Parker?" Sebastian said.
The man scoffed. “Nice try. Not on the list, you’ll need to leave.”
Sebastian racked his brain, sure he knew Jonathan Parker, they were—friends. Right? Certainly he could think up someone Jonathan knew that he could pretend to me. The only name that racked his brain that Jon had ever showed to care about was Ella Hart. Something told him that the guard wouldn’t believe he was an Ella.
"You know the man running for mayor? Vince Beaumont, he’s my brother. What if I gave him a call, he’d tell you to let me in."
The guard looked as if he had just been shot, like he lost.
"Did you say Beaumont?" The guard asked.
Sebastian looked confused. “Yes. I’m—uh—Sebastian Beaumont and my brother is—”
"Go." The guard said, crossing a name off the list and avoiding eye contact with Sebastian.
Sebastian knew better than to question this. As he walked by he saw his named was clearly on the sheet of paper. The more he thought about it, the more it made sense. Jonathan had wrote a book about all of their lives. About his group of friends all of which had let Jon in. He did seem like the kind of person in need of friends, who, after all this time, would have Sebastian on a list just in case he came, just so he would have more friends at his own party. It was really, kind of sad.
Sebastian walked into the lavish party, a grin forming on his face. Though it clearly cost a fortune, something about it screamed Devil Town and the parties he grew with.
That when it happened.
A blonde figure, small and bubbly, giggling at something as she danced, caught his eye. Sara Cunningham.
Sebastian smiled uncontrollably at the sight. Watching for a few moments, he decided to casually confront her. Coming up from behind he softly placed his hand on her hip.
"Excuse me, but you wouldn’t happen to know who I could talk to about the temperature in here, do you? It’s a bit stuffy." He said in her ear, forced to be close to be heard over the music.
After that night Sebastian and Sara fell back into the same place they were in Devil Town. Best friends.
—-
That was the past. That was over. Now, he was stuck in this city where his brother was everywhere. Running to rule. Where he was constantly reminded of everything he lost and everything he couldn’t gain. He had turned to drinking and pills, finding it hard to stay sober at any time of the day.To make matters worse he had, one drunken night, slept with Sara. He had thought up that moment for years. Instead of it being the intimate moment he imagined, it was sloppy and he felt guilty. He wanted more from Sara, but knew better than to think she would want something from him. That thought only added to his addiction.
The bar he was at, a grimy and dimly lit hole in the wall was the only place he felt comfortable. He was seen as Vince’s younger brother, again, in this place. He would constantly get his picture taken and hounded by press to talk about his brother’s character and how amazing he was. It sickened him and only made those thoughts that he had buried down come to light once more. To make matters worse, reporters had started screaming new things at him to get a reaction as he left local bars or restaurants, they began shouting about Jetta. He had left Devil Town to get away from all of this. It had happened, he had been over it, now the drugs were bringing all the wrong things back.
He wanted Sara. He knew that he didn’t need to leave for a year again. He just needed her to help. He just needed that one breathe of fresh air, and that was her. She was the missing piece in his life and always had been. He knew that now in this state. It was as if being like this made his see clearer. He downed his last glass of whiskey letting the warm liquid burn down his throat as he headed out towards her apartment.
Even in this state he still knew exactly how to get to her. It was burned in his brain. The cold streets of New York that once seemed alive now were dead. As he hailed a cab, his mind raced. All he wanted was to be changed. To be the person he was that night in New York with her. The person he was. Only Sara could help him, he just needed to kiss her. To show her how he really felt. The cab drove up to her building, he was let in, after all, he practically lived here. He stumbled to the elevator, hitting the 42nd floor. He could feel the stares burning into him of the employees and tenants of the building as the elevator doors closed.
It seemed like hours until he reached her floor. His brain couldn’t think anymore. He could concentrate. He just needed to speak, to express how he felt without thought. Walking her door, he began knocking louder than he probably should have, a result of his inebriated state.
"Sara!" He yelled, putting his forehead to the door, still knocking. "Sar!" He called again.
The day of the explosion changed everything, it turned Sara's life upside down and forced her to see the world in a whole new light. While she'd been aware for some times that her picture perfect world was not what it seemed she truly had no idea the evils that lied in her own backyard. The silent ones that threatened to eat alive the people she held closest to her. From a distance she watched as they did, the power they all received acted more like a curse then a blessing at times. It was beyond their control and the truth was that being seventeen was hard enough but being seventeen with power greater then anyone could imagine was crushing and for some it had.
Looking back now it all felt like another lifetime and just yesterday all at the same time. It was overwhelming to think about and most days it threatened to consume her but she'd managed to preserver, she'd managed to push forward and create a life for herself separate from everything she'd left behind in Devil Town. Leaving the past behind her was much harder then she'd ever imagined though, while it meant breaking away from every heartbreak, every disappointment, every disaster that had happened on account of that tiny little Ohio town, it was still home. That frustrated Sara more than anything because as much as she truly wanted to let it all go, it was impossible because Devil Town was always going to be a part of her, it was ingrained in everything fiber of her being and there was no leaving it behind because she carried it with her like battle wounds of war never won.
Regardless of the past she tried so desperately to leave behind, Sara had built a rather nice life for herself in New York and was well into her second year as a surgical intern at the local hospital. The hours were long and she rarely slept anymore but the lack of free time meant there was little time for Sara to think about anything other then work. It was all consuming and frankly that was what she needed right now, a distraction to tear her mind from it all. Although it seemed that was not the kind of relief she would receive tonight, on the one night that she needed a distraction more than anything she'd been sent home after getting sick in a waste basket at the nurses station. She swore up and down that she was alright but her attending did not seem convinced and was even more upset with her when he had discovered that she had surpassed the max hours worked for the week by over 20 hours. She was sent home on the spot and suddenly Sara was faced with daunting reality of her life.
Sara fumbled with her keys as she came up the stone steps of her tiny studio apartment in Gramercy. In Sara's other hand she clutched a paper page that held the answers to just where her future might lie. She was tired and nauseous and wanted nothing more then to crawl into her bed and sleep it all away but she'd been putting this off for too long, the signs were all there it was just a matter of accepting the truth. Dropping her keys in the bowl next to the table she peeled her coat from her body draping it hap haphazardly over the back of a chair, that paper bag never leaving her grip as she walked into the bathroom. There she pulled the bag open and removed its content. Staring down at the daunting pregnancy test in her hand Sara found it hard to breath for a moment. After mere minutes the test sat on the edge of the sink as the timer ticked away. Sara leaned against the door of the bathroom as far from it as she could get in the small bathroom. The timer buzzed and Sara jumped turning it off before her eyes wondered to the test and she stared for a long moment before fleeing from the bathroom. This was just too much, there was just absolutely no way she could be pregnant, not after everything.
Passing the bookshelf in her living room she pauses as her eyes come across a picture that sat in a black frame on that very shelf. Its a picture of herself, about five or six years old sandwiched between two very different looking little boys. One with his dark hair, olive skin, and wolf like grin, the other with his golden smile, sandy blonde hair and pale skin. She'd never seen the three of them happier and her fingers reached out to brushed across the picture and the nostalgia was over whelming. Where had they lost there ways? Where had they lost each other? How broken her life had become began to finally wash over Sara and the people she'd lost along the way to escape Devil Town began to flood her mind. Just a year ago she'd welcome Sebastian back and he'd been the happiest she'd seen him since before Daniel's death. Watching Jetta self destruct had done something to Sebastian, it broke him and more painful than anything for Sara was watching it all happen and having no power to fix it. There wasn't a thing she wouldn't do for Sebastian but she was powerless when it came to him and even more so when it came to making him happy. He'd been refeshed when he'd came back from his long trip abroad but she'd watched from a distance over the last year as he tumbled into another down ward spiral and she was helpless now and if the test in the bathroom said what she feared she'd be even more helpless. Wiping at her face, Sara hadn't even realized that she'd started to cry. Her whole life was depending on one little white test sitting in her bathroom and she couldn't bring herself to even look at it.
As if by some kind of cue from the gods above the knocking began and the drunk sounds of Sebastian's yelling at her front door. Clenching her eyes shut she sunk to the floor for a moment hoping that he would just leaving, that he'd knock for a moment and realize she wasn't home and be gone. When it didn't stop though Sara knew she had no choice, the last thing she needed right now was to get kicked out of her apartment. Running her fingers through her restless curls Sara realized she probably looked a completely mess with her curls all astray and her face red and puffy from crying. Wiping her face she put on a brave face for a moment and pulled the door open with a stubborn look open her porcelain features. "What do you think you're doing? Are you trying to wake the dead?" Sara said in frustration as she pulled him into the apartment to shut him up.
As she pulled him she grabbed a hold of him to steady him in his current state before stepping away from him quickly. Being close to him made her feel sick to her stomach as she though about what was waiting for her in the bathroom at this very moment. He reeked of booze and smoke and Sara looked at him with a mix of anger and pity. "Are you drunk?" She says with a sigh her shoulders relaxing and showing her state of surrender. "What are you doing here Sebastian?" She asked trying desperately to keep her distance. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for Sebastian but there was also a part of her knew that getting mixed up with this boy was nothing but trouble. That ultimately if she let it would destroy her because Sebastian, well Sebastian would always be the boy Jetta loved. That was history and love she couldn't dare compete with and frankly she was too old and too tired to even try and she loved Sebastian too much to let it destroy their friendship. He was after all one of her best friends and then suddenly her heart sunk into her stomach at the mere thought. Sebastian was her best friend but there was also a very good chance that he was the father of her unborn baby. The baby she was refusing to confirm at this very moment.
I just broke up with my boyfriend. For good. My heart is in pieces. Sue me for having a moment.
