For a lot of last summer and all of my final semester at CUNY I reported on the healthcare system in Liberia post-Ebola. I found that the viral catastrophe that was Ebola has now been replaced by a much less talked about silent healthcare crisis. Vandross, photographed in this story, is one of the Liberians I met along the way who told me about their struggles to get basic care. Its election night in NYC and I’m off to go watch the results with City Council candidate for D45 and community activist Anthony Beckford. This is Beckford out campaigning on Halloween night. While packing up he spotted NYPD officers gathering near a store across the street. Data Spotlight: A Growing Population of Seniors

The amount of Chinatown and the Lower East Side residents over the age of 60 grew from 17 percent of the area’s total population in 2006 to over 25 percent in 2016, according to data from American Community Survey 1-year estimates. The data breakdown below is based on estimates for the Public Use Microdata Area (a geographic area used by the US Census) most closely aligned with the two neighborhoods.

(Gurami) Some Greenwich Village residents worry that somebody’s going to steal Christmas. It’s not the Grinch, It’s Ai Weiwei.  Christmas tree lights the Washington Square Arch every holiday season, but not this year. Instead, the famous Chinese artist’s installation will replace the main holiday decorations. Some local residents think it will politicize the recreational space, but not everybody agrees. Listen what local residents and park goers are saying.

I walked by a group of worshippers singing in a church in my Brooklyn neighborhood this morning. It reminded me of one of the last times I went to church which was back in Tahn, Liberia. During my first week in Liberia I went to the Ducor Hotel and looked out on Westpoint, Liberia's most densely populated slum. This week I had the opportunity to visit Westpoint with Musa, a Liberian who grew up in there and who still lives there with his family. This photo is the opposite view shot from the waterside in Westpoint looking back at the Ducor Hotel. Westpoint is home to more than 75,000 people and is built on a beach. The sandy peninsula is rapidly eroding leaving families homeless. Latrines (pictured here) are few and far between. All of this right in downtown Monrovia. Musa, my guide for the afternoon, wants to help his community and thinks education is the key. With the help of some friends he launched Educate West Point, a nonprofit that works to make sure kids stay in school by making sure they don't have to worry about school fees, uniforms, food, or poor health.
