Oldest searches out these Best Of compendiums from Friends of the Library sales and occasionally comes in to show me a gem
Image Description below cut:
A single panel pen & ink comic with descriptions of four to-go coffee cup lids, and the supposed collector in the center.
Title: Appendix B (suggesting this is part of a larger field guide) Coffee Lids of Greater Old Red Falls
Center image: circular portrait of a cartoon man grinning, behind the wheel of a car, steering with one hand and holding up a steaming, lidded cup of coffee in the other. He has a black buzz cut and goatee, and is wearing a name tag on his jacket. He looks as if lids are his hyperfixation, and indeed the caption says "Collected in the Field, Annotated by L.W. Jackson," who this person is.
The drawing of four lids are arranged around his picture, two on the right and two on the left. Their features are labelled with rectangular boxes with arrows pointing to each feature.
#1 - The Classic "Lucky's" Lid from Lucky's Fast Food Franchise - a flat lid with a tear off tab
Label A - little smoke-stack for escaping steam (tiny flattened cone with a vent)
Label B - Braille writing indicating "decaf" or "other"
Label C - Neat detail work: horseshoe logo!
Label D - (pointing at opening) Big open hole makes for lots of spills
Label E - ( pointing to the triangle that covered the hole, shown flying off the lid) Perforated tab - once it's off, it's OFF
#2 - Molded Capuccino Lid from Grub 'N Go
(a more domed, but somewhat plain, lid)
Label A - High profile leaves room for foam
Label B - (pointing to marks on the top) Not sure what all these abbreviations stand for
Label C - (pointing to drinking hole) Aperture still allows spilling
Label D - Indented cavity leaves room for nose when sipping
#3 - The "Jumpin' J" Truckstop Lid, Traveler's Buddy
(Another domed lid, but with a tab that moves from the drinking hole to a bump on the opposite side)
circle inset shows Underside View of tab
Label A - (pointing at tab) Distintictive feature is this folding flap that can be be bent back n' forth to either "seal" opening or "lock" on rear tab.
Label B - (pointing at "lock" bump) An interesting but bulky solution, hard to operate with one hand i.e. while driving
Label C - (pointing at raised markings on bottom edge) Elaborate detailing
#4 - "Hot Stoppe's" Lid - Convenience Store Style
(a third domed lid, but constructed in two layers that rotate - a cutaway shows "x-ray view" with both layers rotating, a tab opposite the opening moves one layer so the opening seals!)
Circular inset shows the hole opening with a PHHP!
Label A - Best Solution is this sliding mechanism that can open or close the sipping aperture
Label B - easily operated while driving!
