From the prologue of the Forces rewrite, which starts out with a flashback to when Sonic and Tails are 11 and 4.
“I wanna be like a comet,” Tails yawned. “Yeah?” “Mmhm.” Sonic hummed, and Tails felt the vibration of it where he nestled against him. “When you spindash, you kinda look like a comet,” he told him. “But comets don’t stick around for very long.” “They don’t?” “No. They’ve got a long way to travel, so we only get to see them for a little bit.” “Where are they traveling to?” Tails asked, rubbing at his eyes with his fist. “To the sun, bud. It can take some of them a while to do that.” “Bet you could do it in no time at all,” Tails said. A quiet laugh escaped him. “You know it. But I don’t think I’ll make that trip any time soon. I like it here on Mobius.” “I used to wanna fly away into the stars,” Tails told him through another yawn. “Past the moon and the sun.” “Yeah? That sounds pretty far.” “Mmhm. That was the point.” “Huh.” Sonic didn’t say anything else for a minute, his rapid heartbeat the only sound between them as Tails slumped against his chest. “Well… if anyone can fly that far, it’s you. You can do anything, kid.” “That’s okay, I don’t want to now.” He felt Sonic stiffen with surprise. “You don’t?” “Mm-mm.” The outline of the comet started to blur as Tails’s eyelids grew heavy. “Being with you’s way better.” He felt Sonic’s chin come to rest atop his head, gaze still on the distant stars above. “Can’t argue that, kiddo.” “Good, ‘cause I’d win.” Sonic’s sudden laugh jostled him, keeping sleep at bay for a little while longer as his own giggles escaped. “Someone’s feeling cocky, huh?” “It’s not cocky when being right is indisputable,” Tails pointed out. Sonic snorted. “That sentence right there is the very definition of cocky.” “Well, I learned from the best.” Tails grinned to himself as he continued to watch the comet make its journey across the sky.
I don't know, there's just something about this exchange that lives in my head rent-free at all times, so I think it's fair to say it's one of my favorites!
