Perché -riprese egli- qualche volta io provo per lei uno strano sentimento, specie quando mi è vicina come ora. Mi par di avere nel cuore una corda invisibile legata strettamente, inestricabilmente a un'altra simile situata nella parte corrispondente del suo essere. E se un burrascoso braccio di mare e duemila miglia di terra ci separeranno, temo che questa corda che ci unisce si strappi e sento che, dentro, sanguinerei. Quanto a lei, mi dimenticherà.
