Curse Painter - Jordan Rivet

A Robin Hood-inspired fantasy story.

Briar is trying to lie low and make a quiet living selling small, harmless curses to villagers looking for petty revenge against their neighbours. But when a curse goes horribly wrong and she is forced to flee her home, she joins up with a mysterious boy named Archer and his band of outlaws to help rescue a kidnapped girl from an impregnable fortress. Everyone has their secrets, but Briar and Archer discover they have something in common: they both have family legacies they're trying to leave behind.

I really enjoyed this magic system, the rules that limit it and the creative ways Briar uses them to her advantage. It was really easy to dive into the story and fall in love with the characters. I wish there had been some sort of epilogue because the ending felt kind of abrupt, but I guess I'll just have to read the sequel instead!
