#mardi gras massacre #blood tw #video nasty #slasher film #american cinema #1978 #jack weis #curt dawson #gwen arment #william metzo #laura misch #laura misch owens #ronald tanet #butch benit #nancy dancer #cathryn lacey #wayne mack #donn davison #dennis coffey #mike theodore #fairly wretched regional indie slasher that would probably have slid into oblivion if it hadn't ended up on the dpp video nasties list in #the 80s. clearly a minimal budget thing and made with sub professional actors (and presumably crew). heavily indebted to the work of #Herschell Gordon Lewis (it's not unfair to think of this as a loose remake of Blood Feast tbh) with ritualistic murder scenes that are as #uncomfortably misogynistic as they are weirdly repetitive. curious decisions abound‚ including spending a lot of the run time on the #unlikely and discomforting romance between an asshole cop and a sex worker. this is skeevy garbage cinema and has long outlived any #relevance it had‚ but it has two saving graces: the first is the disco soundtrack which is mostly solid but occasionally spectacular (Big #City Sidewalk is a new favourite jam) and the second is the bizarro presence of Bill Metzo as the killer. his zoned out spacey performance #might not be exactly what we'd call 'good' but it's goddamn fascinating. watch as he orders chinese food in a sinister fashion! watch as he #awkwardly fumbles about giving the delivery driver a tip! watch as he carefully barters with pimps in an immaculate three piece suit with a #gigantic wad of money and a weirdly fixed smile. he's magnetic in his peculiarity and the film is only really bearable when he's onscreen

Mardi Gras Massacre (1978)

“A well-dressed man (William Metzo) walks into a scummy New Orleans club and asks the bartender about paying for a date. When he is pointed to the house escort service, he tells the woman that he needs someone "special". In particular, he says he wants the most "evil" woman available. As if this makes some kind of measurable sense, the waitress instantly knows the perfect gal, and points him to Shirley (Laura Misch Owens), with an assurance that she will fit the bill. With his requirements met, the man, John, takes Shirley back to his place, where he straps her to a table and eventually sacrifices her to an Aztec god. The next day, after her remains have been found on the train tracks and taken to the morgue, we meet detective Frank Abraham (Curt Dawson), who is on the case. Unfortunately, John is just getting started, and more "evil" lives will need to be cut short to appease his deity. It will be up to crusty-ass Frank to stop this reign of terror, but first, he will have to deal with his misogyny and alcoholism. Also, there is a ten minute (plus) dance routine turned brawl at a disco in there somewhere...”
