Mastering the Art of Cushion Compacts
comparisons of cushion compacts!!
bc i dont want to start studying just yet i have decided to write short reviews of the cushion foundation compacts i have bought and tried. this is literally for my own satisfaction im not trying to be a legit beauty blogger
the reason why im obsessed w cushion compacts is bc 1. im lazy and putting actual foundation or even bb cream on every day is still too much for me lol. plus the foundation i have is a bit too heavy to wear every day. but using cushions is soooo convenient and reapplying/touchups r super easy!! 2. they have so much spf in them!!!!!! not to mention all the other antioxidants n nice ingredients n stuff. thank u korean beauty 3. i prefer the actual formulas of the cushion foundations to american foundations, and for some reason cushions tend to match my skin color a lot better than separate foundations or bb creams from korean brands
for reference my skin is oily/combo + sensitive (oily on tzone+forehead, combo of normal and dry on my cheeks) and i’m usually around n23 shade, actually a little darker
missha magic cushion okay technically i didn’t buy this, i won it in a giveaway from sokoglam at kcon la 2015, but it was the first cushion i ever tried. pros: it has pretty decent coverage and it’s really cheap for korean cushions (on amazon it’s only $9??? and retail is somewhere from $15-20) cons: it can get cakey after a few hours and it’s a bit drying. reapplying frequently can help but then it also gets more cakey looking and heavy eventually :( also for me personally the color was too light/white for my face even tho i’m pretty sure i have the n23 shade
amorepacific color control cushion compact this cushion is so nice!!!! i got it from sephora on a whim bc i wanted a new cushion compact and i wanted to rack up sephora rewards points lol. but it turned out to be rly great!! pros: v nice dewy look but not over the top, blends w skin very well (the 204 color is perfect for me im so thankful) and looks natural, moisturizing + doesn’t rly get cakey at all <3 this might not be for everyone, but there’s a scent to the foundation that’s like.. very cosmetic-y but i actually like it bc it makes me feel like i’m putting fancy makeup on lol. also for korean brands, there’s a bigger color range! there’s five diff colors instead of like, two, and two of them r relatively dark so ppl w medium/dark skin tones have some options!! woohoo!! cons: doesn’t have Great coverage but u can get p decent coverage w layering.. the real con is it’s expensive.. retail $60 for one cushion + a refill. but since it comes w a refill it does last a while!!
IOPE air cushion (coverage formula) wanted to try IOPE bc it’s one of the best known cushions in korea so when i saw the coverage formula (identified by c21 or c23 instead of n21 or n23) on sale on memebox i copped it!!! it was on sale for $41 which included one cushion + a refill when its normally $51 i think? so p good deal! pros: COVERAGE IS GR8 n the best part is it barely gets cakey after a few hours, but reapplying gets rid of that problem. u also get the dewy look but it’s a lot more subtle. the cushion also lasts for a pretty long time too... i’ve been using cons: a bit less moisturizing (but not drying!), and the color (c23) is a liiiiiiiittle light for me but it’s not Too noticeable. it kinda loses the dewy look after two hours or so and it looks more matte, but i guess that could be a pro too. also without the sale it’s relatively expensive
april skin cushion i actually first heard of this cushion bc of an ad on fb.. i saw a vid demo and i was like HOLY SHIT this looks amazing. but i couldn’t find where to buy it bc it was sold out.. until memebox stocked it AND gave a $5 discount. it’s not on memebox rn (maybe bc they sold out) but hopefully they’ll restock it soon bc i think this is my FAV cushion now. pros: the 23 color actually matches me perfectly which means it’s slightly darker than the typical 23 korean shade. yas!! coverage is SO GOOD even tho i currently have some acne + acne scars on my cheeks this cushion covered them up in only one or two pats. so a little formula goes a looooooooong way and it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing much at all!! DEWINESS IS HELLA and it’s also rly moisturizing. it also blends into my skin rly well! best part is it’s not too expensive $33 is retail price i think and even tho it doesn’t come w a refill i think it’s definitely worth it!! cons: if u don’t want to look dewy then this is not good for u at all. this is basically the opposite of matte. if u have oily skin, even if u blot beforehand this might make u look rly oily :( honestly can’t think of any other cons except for the standard korean “it only has 2 or 3 shades and they’re rly light” problem.
okay so my basic ranking is: april skin > amorepacific / iope coverage > missha (amorepacific is better than iope if u don’t need too much coverage, but if u need coverage then iope is better) i rly did write this for my own enjoyment but if it does help anyone else or at least interest them then i’d be happy too!! if u made it this far then thx for tolerating my shitty internet writing <3

SPOT IT: CUSHION COMPACT
We scope out the latest beauty craze from Asia.
“Asia—Japan and Korea especially—are the epicenter of beauty innovation,” says Tiila Abbitt, the SEPHORA COLLECTION product development director for accessories. The facts stack up. BB and CC creams have taken American beauty counters by storm in the last few year—as have masks, makeup brushes, nail tools, and nail art. So what’s the latest? Cushion compacts, says Abbitt, which have been the go-to coverage option in South Korea for the past two years. Below, the basics on our newest obsession from the other side of the Pacific. MELISSA LANE
WHAT IT IS The innovative cushion compacts soak and fill a circular mesh sponge with product, which you press a puff onto to release—lightly for a little coverage, more for a lot. Think of it as BB or CC cream lite. It has the same coverage and myriad skin-care benefits—SPF, antioxidants, antiagers—but in an uber-light texture.
HOW TO USE IT After completing your skincare routine, press the puff onto the sponge and pat onto your face, building up to your desired coverage. Since it’s not a tube (unlike most BB and CC creams), it’s perfect for on-the-go, and you can reapply throughout the day as you please. The formula is usually fantastically sheer, and its dispensing so conservative that out-and-about touch-ups are a cinch. (Yup, get ready to fall hard.)
PRO TIP: Make sure to close the cover after use to avoid letting moisturizers and other ingredients evaporate.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT It’s infallible. Everything you need is in one self-contained compact—the formula plus foolproof cushion, the mirror, the applicator. You can’t spill it, and it’s virtually impossible to go overboard with it. It’ll be your best friend in hot, sunny weather, too: It stays surprisingly cool, often mattifies, and almost always offers sun protection (some go as high as 50 plus).
PRO TIP: Want some help identifying your shade? Pop into the closest Sephora, and take advantage of Color IQ, a complimentary consultation tool that will filter through all of our foundations (including our cushion compacts) to find the best match for your skintone.
